Brake lights staying on!

Another problem that has been discovered with the STs is that some brake lights are staying and draining the battery. I had to have my Spyder jumped started at work one day when I forgot to tap my brake to make sure the light turned off. Most times I have to keep tapping the brake for quite a while in order to get the light to turn off. I visited a different dealership yesterday and talked with them about this problem as I had forgotten to mention this when I had my first service done at my usual dealership. They told me they've seen this problem twice, and that this is a little known problem with the STs. Something is a little too long, preventing the pedal from returning to the correct position and the light stays on. Says it is a quick fix, and they just need to "shave" it down a little. They couldn't fit me in yesterday, but will be getting it taken care of later this week. Said this would be covered under warranty. So, make sure your brake lights are off when you walk away from your ST.

Hey Zenagirl, my ST Limited has been in shop for three weeks now. One issue was my brake light sticking and set off my VSS code as well as drained my battery. Hope yours is a quick fix as I am still waiting. BRP as gotten involved with my dealer to try to assist with repair. Best f luck.

Sounds like they are talking about shaving the rubber brake pedal stop. I had to do that on my 12 RT Ltd following installation of some floorboards that required removal of one end of the brake pedal connecting rod. Brake lights stayed on...shaved a tad off the brake pedal rubber stop...problem fixed.
Mentioned this to the BRP techs at the Owner's Event and was told that what I did was a good fix and that I would not have a problem. Haven't had any issues.

I have been seeing this exact issue with my 2013 ST for a couple of months now. I am just about due for service so I plan to have them look at it when its in. I had called the service department at my dealer though and asked them if they had been seeing it and they told me they hadn't heard any additional reports of this issue so far. I think if you search the forums though there are some other threads where people describe the same problem. Its probably worth asking your dealer to report it as potential issue to Can-Am and ask them to read up on forums like this one to confirm that others are really having the issue.

Good to know. Can you provide a link back to that post or an ID for the service advisory so I can make sure my dealer knows. I don't think they use the Internet too much at my dealership.

I had forgotten to mention this to my dealer when I took the Spyder in for it's first checkup. Even though I did drain the battery one day at work, and had to have a jump start, it didn't throw any codes. So, I got a great check up, except that I noticed as soon as I brought it home, the light was stuck on again. I'm taking it to a closer dealer tomorrow who stated that he's seen this twice, and is an easy fix. So, that's what I'm expecting! I didn't realize that this had been posted on this forum earlier. I had checked for postings regarding the brake light when I first started experiencing the problem but none were posted at that time. I should have checked deeper to see if any one had brought it up since then. pps:

Brought my Spyder home from the dealer yesterday, and so far... no problems with the brake light staying on. Because BRP acknowledges that some of the 2013 models have this problem, the fix is covered and no fee. took about an hour and I was on my way! :clap::clap::clap:

Ahhhh...thanks for the info. We noticed my wife's brake lights were on, one day after stopping and eating. I've only seen it happen once. Have to look into it.

SpyRyd - When I first talked with them on the 13th, it sounded like a rod was simply a little too long preventing the brake from being able to return all the way to its correct place and that it just needed "shaved" off a little bit. :yes::yes: He said that not all the 2013's are having the problem, but just a few. Sorry, still not clear on what was done to fix the problem. I don't have a 2013 but think perhaps the brake pedal to master cylinder connecting rod is basically the same as the 2012s. The rod is metal so I doubt they "shaved" off anything from the rod. I suspect they shaved off the brake pedal rubber stop to allow the brake pedal to return just a tad further to activate the brake light switch. Nailing down exactly what they did may help other '13 owners experiencing the same problem.

Shaving the rod or shaving the pedal

Hi Lamont, when I first went in and discussed it with one of the folks in the service department, they stated that the rod needed to be shaved or shortened, but I saw someone else mention in a post that their solution to the problem was that they shaved the brake pedal. I will check with the dealership to see exactly what they did and will provide a follow-up post. I can see what you mean by posting exactly what the solution was so others can benefit from it. Thanks for making me more aware.
