Brake Help

Awhile back my handbrake on my 2013 rt Ltd would bottom out the first time you grabbed it ,you grab it again and it would be ok,
So I thought it had air in the system .I bled it(the handbrake system) several times and with no change. I put new seals in it with no change.
After much thinking and pulling my hair out I noticed the foot pedal would travel about an inch farther the first time you hit it, do it again and it would
be solid. So I decided to bleed the Brakes.Yea I know you are supposed to hook up to Buds, but I did it anyway and got a lot of air out but it didn't help.Did it several times more and didn't help . Every time that I would bleed it I would have a hard pedal as long as I didn't move. As soon as I moved I would have to pump it twice to get a hard pedal.
I took it to the dealer yesterday and had him hook it to the Buds to bleed it $465.
Picked it up today and same thing,no help still has a inconsistent pedal.

My Question is Why you can have a hard pedal just sitting but as soon as you start moving the pedal goes to about a half inch from the floor board with a hard pedal.
My hand brake does not work very good with that much travel on the master cylinder.

I Hate to have take it back and have it sit for a week and get the same results. When I called The dealer he Immediately wanted to blame it on the handbrake and says that every one that he has seen has the same problem.

Anyone have any ideas.:banghead:

I have about 55years as a shade tree mechanic ,Machinist and machine shop owner, but this has me baffled.

This is common unfortunately. While you can stop with the first press on the peddle, it does get harder and on the second.
This worried me too when I first got my Spyder. I talked to a few other owners and they stated the same thing!
Had the dealer check it on my 600 mile service and they did as you got done, bleed and buds.

Again no fear in stopping but it is a fact the peddle travel is shorter on the second press.

So this is common for me and many other I have talked to.

Is the pedal actually softer on the first press or is it just further down but still hard? I would suspect the reason would be the amount that the pads retract when the pedal is released. If the rotors are not running true that could do. But it I suppose you would feel it if that were the case.

For me the peddle is hard it just travels farther on the first press.
Again I have NO issue being able to stop on the first press. Heck I have had to make panic stops on the 405 freeway in rush hour traffic and have had no issue stopping. BUT I just notice if you press, release, and press again the peddle does not travel as far.

Again talking with many other Spyder owners, this appears to be common.

Thanks for the reply -Bob

I've had this spyder about 1 1/2 yr and 9000 miles and it has worked great till a couple months ago.
Driving home today I could double pump and within about 5sec would have to double pump again.

On the first press it is hard just goes down farther ,but when it does my handbrake bottoms out on the hand grip and have to double pump it.
I can't use the footbrake because of hip and nerve issue so I need the handbrake.

Little checking..!!

when bleeding parking brake off...? The wear on the pads can cause this as they may still be retracting the same but the material on the pads is less. Make sure the fluid level is topped off and discs are true. I pump the brakes when I use them (hair raising experiances) but have not noticed mine needing it. :dontknow:

Brake pads are new. I don't remember if parking brake was on or off .The dealer should have known the correct procedure and his results weren't any better than mine . I don't mind double pumping so much but as long a I am moving you double pump and let off for 4-5 seconds you have to double pump again and in a real emergency you my not have time to double pump. Its strange that it worked great for a year and half.

I agree. The only other thing would be some moving parts are hanging up. I would check or rebuild the master cylinder to start. Especially if it gets longer on the pumps...

Check the caps on the brake fluid reservoir. Make sure the diaphragms are not pushed out. Check the V slits and make sure they are not stuck or dirty.

It's Fixed

It's fixed:yes::yes::yes:

I though I would start over and go thru everything .
I had put on Baha Ron's sintered pads and Heavy duty rotors trying to get better brakes.
I had a little vibration in the brake pedal but I didn't think it was bad enough to cause problems.
So I decided to swap the front rotors with stock and I can't believe it. It worked, no more inconsistent pedal.

I now have the hardest Pedal that I have ever had and same on the hand lever and it does the same thing every time.

So in the end I got what I wanted ,Awesome Brakes . It just took a long time
The only change was a bled system and sintered pads , which I think make a lot of difference and Rotors with no run out.

Thanks for all the input:bowdown:
