• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Hello Spider Lovers! I now have 2,500 miles on my 2011 RT Limited Edition. My question is, when, if ever, will I get more than 28 mpg? I am soooo very tired of listening to my husband rant and rave about his Wing getting 30% more. :spyder:

:welcome: The :spyder2: is not known for its excellent mileage.
There are a lot of factors affecting mileage. Weight of occupants, wind speed, type of roads, road speed, etc.

I keep the windshield at the bottom position most of the time--less air resistance.

I have been keeping averages over the last year and 17,000 plus miles. As the mileage increases on your RT you may find the average will creep up to about 30-31 mpg. I even got 34 mpg once.

This seems to be the average mpg that most are reporting.

It is interesting that the GW's do get better mileage--especially with the biger engine and similar weight of the :spyder2:. My Vulcan 900 gets 45-50 mpg depending on everything.

Most of us drive :spyder2: for what it is--an econo box it is not.

I normally get 28 - 30 mpg on my 2010 RT. I occasionally get 30 - 32 if I ride under 65 mph. Remind your husband that you have 3 wheels to his 2 and probably 2 or 3 times the frontal area catching the wind that his Wing has. Wind resistance and rolling resistance has much more effect on mileage at highway speeds than weight has. I enjoy my Spyder for the stability of the 3 wheels at low speeds and stops and don't worry about the gas mileage.

Twenty-eight is pretty typical. I have averaged that over the last 7,000 miles on my 2011, and my 2010 did about the same, or worse. You can't compare to a motorcycle. Mileage is most dependent on the aerodynamic drag. The Spyder has a much larger frontal area than a two-wheel Goldwing, and is aerodynamically "dirty", with the exposed suspension, and two radiators. Tell your husband to get over it...LOL.

Or just brag that you have an engine reverse gear!:D

I have a 2011 RT Limited and my gas mileage will vary anywhere from 25mpg to 38mpg. 25mpg was the worst I have gotten and that was riding 2 up in a strong head wind, windshield all the way up and pulling a fully loaded RT-622 trailer. The best I got was 38mpg riding solo with the wind shield down and keeping the speed between 55 and 60mph. On average I will get between 33 to 35mpg if I don't get aggressive with the throttle and not lug the engine.

:agree: Scotty put it best... AGAIN!

but... the right wrist also holds some of the cards to the fuel mileage question also...

Hey the next trip you go on with him lead him down a gravel or sand road.:roflblack:

Locks of Luck

I get 32-33 with my Gold Wing Motor Trike....38 when it was a two wheeler. I ride it at 70-75....a headwind will lower the mileage. I get 29-31 on my RT, per my GPS. My RT odometer and speedometer seems to be off about 1.5%.

Just siphon some gas from the wing every week , Bet that will drive him nuts.:roflblack:

If you want to REALLY drive him nuts, add some gas to his tank every week and when he starts to brag about getting 50 - 55 mpg, then stop and let him try to figure out why his mileage dropped back to 38.

Gas Mileage on 2011 RTS/SE5

I have just over 1,100 miles on my 2011. I started getting just over 32mpg when I first starting riding. Now I am getting around 35 mpg. However, I shift at just over 3,000rpm and release the throttle partially with every gear change. I haven't gone over 65 mph yet, so maybe that is why I get good gas mileage. My 09 Burgman 650 gets around 53 mpg and is quieter and smoother. I bought the :spyder2: for fun and for something different. It makes a great conversation piece wherever you go. I like that.

We have 4,200 miles on our 2011 RT Limited and have gotten a low of 22mpg and yesterday I finally got a high of 36mpg. The lowest figures were towing the RT-622 trailer into strong winds and riding two up at 75mph. The 36mpg was two up but at 55mph. I hope it settles in at the higher mpg.

We try to run real gasoline @ least 91 octane. I believe that improves our mileage.

:agree:
But I REALLY like the idea of siphoning some fuel out of his and adding it to your Spyder once in a while... :D
