Bike won't start...

Turns over but won't start after over filling with gas. I was filling my tank at a gas station while not paying attention and looked back to see gas spilling over the side of the tank opening.

I started the bike and within 20 seconds the bike starting running rough and slowly over the next 30 seconds died. Now it won't start at all.
Feels like there is no spark but I am not sure. Maybe the gas is shorting out something electrical? Going to take a leaf blower to it and let it dry out completely.

Any ideas or input would be sincerely appreciated.

I have overfilled my tank before with no problems. Bad gas perhaps??

I started with 1/4 tank of gas so I doubt it. I have used this gas station for quite some time. I will keep you posted. Very strange. I don't think it is a coincidence that something else happened at the same time but who knows?

20 seconds may be enough for fuel to clear fuel rail and injectors, which could allow water to then be pumped; however that does not seem like enough time for water to settle to the bottom of the tank. Nevertheless, it does sound like water in the fuel.

Hydraulic lock?

I have an RT-S and don't know the F3 gas tank and fuel routing layout but maybe they're similar.

In the RT-S, the gas is pumped from one hose on the top of the tank to the fuel filter. As I recall after the fuel filter, there is a Y fitting where one hose goes to the fuel rail and the other goes to the top of the tank into the pressure regulator. Perhaps the absence of an air gap at the top of the tank is introducing some sort of hydraulic lock?

Can you siphon say about 2 quarts out of the tank and see if that improves the situation?

Although I doubt this is the case .... but " vapor lock " may have occurred ????? .... ( wild guess ) ..... good luck ..... try removing a little gas and let the motor cool down .... Mike :thumbup:

Open throttle all the way to the point it won’t open anymore……clear flood position, shuts off injectors…….crank engine while holding throttle wide open…….see if it starts. I’m thinking fuel got into vapor purge line….flooding engine.

I’m sure your aware to be careful of eliminating any pooling fuel around engine where a spark could ignite the fuel…….let it “dry out” awhile…….hate to see it go up in flames.

I would suggest pulling a spark plug and checking it for spark and fuel presence, if it wasn't such a pain to get to access!

Might be right off base, but is there any chance that you've simply filled the air filter &/or housing with gas?? :dontknow:

That'd certainly stop the engine running, and if the liquid gas was getting sucked into the air intake & eventually soaking it, probably do so in much the way you describe; then take bloody forever to dry out - even longer if you've now got a pool of liquid gas in there keeping the filter soaked! :shocked:

If it hasn't all dried out & is now running OK, it might be worth checking that the air filter isn't soaked/air filter housing isn't full of gas?!? :dontknow:

I'm sure you checked this, but any chance the engine stop switch got flipped to stop? Just checking.

Unless something changed in the wiring from '16 to '17, I doubt that.

With the engine stop switch in the STOP position, the starter will not engage on my wife's '17.

I bought a 12 volts charger, a syphon hose, a funnel, a gas container, and a shop manual. Everything came in yesterday evening. The first step will be to remove all of the gas. Then re-fill 3/4 way with Chevron premium. Then attempt to start it. If that does not work, check for spark and fuel.

Now that it has sat for a while, you may want to try starting it before draining fuel. Then, if it does not start, drain the fuel. If there is water in the tank you may have to crank a while to clear the watered down fuel in the fuel line and fuel rail between the pump and the injectors.

Hi to all. Hopefully everyone is having a great time riding their Spyders. I have been very busy so I am just now getting to the bike. Here is the update:

I replaced the fuel filter, drained/refilled the gas tank, and replaced the canister. Its starts but runs really bad now. I ran the codes and got a "P0335" back. Looks like I have a bad crank shaft sensor. I ordered one today on ebay.

yes...... this would be my guess also , it would be flooded big time ,
