Two and a half weeks ago Thurs. Old Town passed out a flyer explaining the new bike night policy …. Drivers Licence and proof of insurance. We rented a car just to get over there for bike night at 6pm there should have been a hundred bikes already on the street. Only 6 bikes went to Uno Pizza about a mile down 192 came back at 8pm Thursday night and the crowd had swollen to about 20. I was stunned very disappointed there should have been 2 or 3 hundred by 8pm. I'm sure the shop and bar owners are going to be upset. I was

That's a shame. If that same thing happened in my area, it would not have stopped me from attending. I do have a drivers license and insurance.

My guess:
They have "other" violatons to worry about.
And if it was the Police checking licenses.........

But that many don't show? when they do that at obi on sundays it cuts out maybe 20% but that is for cars with dark tint, no front plate & other
minor violations but never 95% of the regulars and very few bikes who show have violations

Kind of a strange requirement since motorcycles in Florida are not required to have insurance. If, and this is a big if, the majority of those motorcycles do not have insurance and legally are not required to have insurance, then maybe they knew it was not possible to meet the requirements.

My guess though is word got out about the new requirements and the group simply found another alternate location that was less strict.

So it would appear that you don't have to supply "proof of insurance" unless and until you are involved in an accident.

Like several other things, the vehicle insurance rules in Florida are just stupid.
I think they are one of only about 3 states that still have "no fault" laws still on the books.

Myrtle Beach, SC tried something similar a few years ago and they lost a lot of business. The Chamber of Commerce had it fixed. Money talks.

If I remember correctly, You don't have to have bike insurance as long as you have $10K in medical insurance. Found this after searching FL motorcycle insurance law.
Proof of Financial Responsibility
After getting motorcycle insurance, the insurance company will send the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) details of the insurance policy, which are kept in the DHSMV computer system. Even though DHSMV will have this insurance information in its database, every motorcyclist should keep proof of financial responsibility on them. Proof depends on the type of insurance or financial responsibility you have, but may include the following:
An insurance card from an insurance carrier; or
A Self-Insurance Certificate from the Bureau of Financial Responsibility.

Penalties for Not Having Insurance
Motorcycle owners who cannot provide proof of insurance may have to deal with penalties, such as suspension of driver’s licenses, motorcycle registration, and motorcycle license plates, as well as fees to regain driving privileges.
