bigger or diff. motor?

Questions

New member
anyone ever thought about putting a bigger motor or a diff. motor from another bike on here? just maxed the bike out at 119mph. just wanted to know if another bigger motor would fit? also went to jackson drag strip a few weeks ago to see what the spyder did and was very pleased with the results. does anyone else go to the track, if so where do you go? i am in south carolina would love to meet up with another spyder at a track just to get a few runs in.

Maxed at 119? That's not too fast...this bike can go faster than that without the need for lots of mods...

As far as a new engine goes, I'm not going to be taking the bike to a track and the 0-60 times are faster than most anything else on the road anyway, so no need to spend money on that...

I know doc has the turbo...I figure that's the biggest speed upgrade to date for a spyder.

I was told that the :f_spider:RS computer is set to not let the :f_spider: go over 120MPH , I don't know if thats true or not.:dontknow::popcorn::popcorn::popcorn:

heared that something new should come (a spy ..with the sound of a triumph ??)

I've been just over 120mph on my Spyder (speedo) and there was some left. A little slow as todays bikes go. I've had my stock M109R to 145. That's an 1800 cc but even that speed is not all that special.

On a good machine the only thing you notice is the added wind resistance at these speeds. Ok, and the little white lines are going by pretty fast.... But it's not a good idea to look at them very long.

The most excitement I ever had was running my 1970 Kawasaki Mach III 500cc Tripple at 130 (Speedo). Now THAT was dangerous! Most of the components on that bike were good to about 100mph. The engineering was definitley not able to handle what that 500cc motor could dish out.

Flat out on a 2 mile stretch with a experienced Busa rider piloting it my 08GS topped out at 118 mph. with nothing left. It is an out house on wheels.

I think the engine in it's restricted form cannot get over the aero wall it hits at about that 120 MPH region. A couple of times in perfect conditions I was able to get the speedo a little higher than that, but no more. And that's not too bad. Sometimes you wish it had more but it is what it is.

It would be great to be able to have a track day and just go for it in the proper environment, but so far I can't find a track that will support it. :dontknow: I have never really been too much of a drag guy myself. I crave the corners...

Take your windshield off and replace with something like the one on carbonfiberspyder.com
That's a good sq ft of stalled drag

Nope... not true. That's a rumor going back to the early release days.

We've discussed this in the past. One good way to check is to bring your tach to,say, 5000(in 5th gear), then note your speed. Mine was 67mph. Redline is 9000rpm so 9000/5000 is 1.8 and 67 x 1.8 = 120.6mph. So it looks like you are pretty close to this figure. This is the theoretical maximum if you stop at 9000rpm. If you go to 10000rpm then you should be able to get a theoretical max of 134mph out of her. Now having said that, you may very well not be able to get it up to 10krpm because of other conditions such as DRAG and tire size.:lecturef_smilie: I think the rev-limiter also cuts in at this rpm.
Remember that the rear tire is in lock-step with your engine rpm unless something is slipping (clutch, belt) so all you need to do is find your mph at some particular rpm then use the ratio to calculate speed at any rpm.

Bummer! I went to the site and it's for sale. :( I know what you are saying though. I still have the original Batwing shield, that should do nicely for now.

Going back to the engine, there is obviously much more potential to increase power output without stressing the components too much at all. With more power, you could tweek the gearing as well. The engine core upgrade is a classic example of what can be achieved.

Or you could just say "the heck with it" and throw a turbocharger on it!

The big plus for turbo is when ur not using boost it's just a stock Spyder not a nervous peaky narrowband NA

The 500s had a much peakier powerband than the 750s... When they came up on the pipes it was... well; some folks saw God!
I played a little bit on a friend's 750; loaded with Denco's... Now THAT was a ride... When the front end came off the ground at a bit over 70 I knew that I was in real trouble...

...and then they released the Z1R TC just to kill off some more riders... We've got a guy here in Town who still trots his out a couple of times each summer just to remind himself how much frame and suspension improvement have improved over the years...

I am waiting until my Spyder is out of warranty before I do any real heavy engine performance mods to it. There is a big bore kit available, as well as the turbos, and others have swapped out the stock motor for a Busa along with a bunch of other changes.

When do you go to the Jackson Drag Strip?

It would not take much coaxing to get me to go there with you some time to check things out. You have to pass within 2 miles of my place to get there anyway.

Good choice. With the lower compression, you can still run on pump gas at LOWER bost settings.. Read that again Doc, LOWER boost settings. :-) :-)

I went with 8.5:1, big bore and turbo.

:2thumbs: I wasn't aware that you had done the big bore as well.

I seem to remember something about the amount of boost being used in Bonneville that earned him the nickname Doru the Destroyer. :yikes: Question is whether he learned his lesson or not? :dontknow: :D
