OK, here's the BIG QUESTION.....
i like a FULL FACE modular helmets... and with all the talented riders out there, i need to know your opinion....
Question: which FULL FACE helmet is the MOST QUIET....? :dontknow:
i've bought 12 helmets in the last 5 yrs, all Full Face & Modulars... from $79 - $250.... all very noisy at speeds in excess of 50 mph.... actually, the cheapest one, is the most quiet of them all... but still too loud... yes, i also wear 'ear' plugs... and btw, i'm half deft...

we are riding X-Country in June that will last 4 weeks, and i REALLY WANT a helmet that produces minimal noise...

I use a Shoei Neotec. (A little expensive) Rhode 7900 mile cross country last year.. No ear plugs and chin guard up most all the way. Could ear my music through my sena or the radio. Hope this helps.

You might want to check out webbikeworld and type in helmet noise - numerous articles - maybe a good place to start your research.

could not find any selection of quietest helmet: did mention that helmet collar and proper helmet fit and custom proper fit ear plugs make a big difference

What they do say:

"There are many variables that can cause helmet noise, including helmet design, motorcycle design, weather (i.e., cross winds), turbulence and also the configuration of the motorcycle's fairing or windscreen"

"The Schuberth C3 (review) and Schuberth C3 Pro (review) have special double neck rolls to help reduce noise levels. These helmets are very good at controlling noise levels, especially for a flip-up. But, they must correctly fit your head shape and again, it's all relative -- no helmet will make it library-quiet, especially if you don't wear ear plugs.
While it may seem strange, riding a "naked" bike can actually cause less turbulence and lower noise levels.
This may seem counterintuitive, and many riders don't believe it. But helmets that are out in the clean air stream and not influenced by "dirty" air and turbulence caused by a windscreen can provide much lower noise levels. Don't forget that turbulent air isn't always directly felt by the rider."

The most quiet helmet I have used was a modular Scorpion. About $300.00. Actually thinking of buying another one. My current Shoei has ventilation issues.

I'll ditto the endorsement of Webbikeworld, just a fantastic resource for not only helmets but *all* things motorcycle.

As for helmets, I don't have much experience with modulars-- I'm on my third Shoei Qwest full-face, with earplugs it's *exceptionally* quiet-- but from other riders, I know that the Schuberth lids are the "gold standard" for quiet modulars. Alas, you'll need to *pay in gold* for their helmets, so that's a choice you have to make.

That said, had a Schuberth fit me, I probably would have bought one (sadly, my big chin was too close to the chin bar for comfort). The Shoei Neotec fit me just like the Qwest but I could get the Qwest cheaper and it did everything I wanted to do. And, all things being equal, the quietest regular helmet will invariably be quieter than the quietest modular, simply because of the construction of the lid.

Personally, I believe your helmet is the single most important purchase you can make, even more important than the bike you ride. Not only for safety, but comfort, quality features and noise reduction all make the most difference in the world. You forget you're wearing a perfect helmet, but you'll always lament the compromise in wearing the wrong helmet.

I've found the Shoei RF-1100 to be fairly quiet, as is the Qwest. The RF-1200 is newer but I haven't ridden with one yet.

The quietest I've heard of is the Schubert C3 but its fit and price have kept me away.

. . . . . your earplugs may be the problem.

If your earplugs seal your ear, any vibrations in your bones is transmitted to the aural canal and translated into sound.

You can test if they do by eating a potato chip ( or something crunchy ) without the earplugs, and then put on your earplugs and have another chip. If your ears are sealed, it will be MUCH louder and the 'noise' much more detailed. Some plugs will seal your ear, others don't. This is why some in-ear headphones sound so good with such little sound output.

With sealing earplugs, any vibration on the Spyder ( wind or even the handlebars & foot pegs ) will travel through your skeletal system and end up vibrating the bones (and fluid) in your ear canal and be translated into "sound". Also, even without a helmet, the wind through your hair will be audible.

Generally, helmets do not have any sound deadening layers. Even neoprene and most foams found in the helmets interior, will transmit vibrations - and the snugger the fit, the more vibration passed into your skull.

So, check and see if your earplugs seal your ears. If they do, try some of your helmets with and without them. No helmet is perfectly quiet, but without your earplugs you may find something you already have works much better than it does with you wearing plugs.

Been using Nolan helmets for the last 10 years or so.

N40 series if you do not want the full face version. Have drop down sunshades and removable chin bars.

N100 series for full face style with drop down sunshades. The front lifts up so you do not have to wedge your head into the helmet.

Not cheap. $350-$450 depending on where you purchase.

I can hear the radio on :ani29: well. Communications with the other bike are also pretty much noiseless. (Sena SMH 10).

Fit is huge. Then, quiet. For me, Shoei modular is all day comfortable, quiet, good ventilation. Need a new one, so also looking at a Schuberth C3 Pro. Good luck! Joe

Schuberth Helmets is the quiets helmet out there but top dollar i just got new ones for i and the wife ended up going with LaZer Monaco Helmet funny they are the ones making helmets for CAN-AM now

The wife and I both have the Shoie Neotec , spendy $600 + , I wore a 3/4 for 30 years and just got tired of wearing ear plugs , with the Shoie I can have a 10 hour day in the saddle and not have any problem with the noise .
