Belt out of line - cause?

So I recently had my front pulley done at the dealer. Noticed this when doing a service.

The belt is right over to the outside of the front pulley. I can hear it.
The rear is right in to the inside.
Possible they did not fit the washer on the inside of the new pulley?

Prior to that the belt sat nice. In the middle on the front and a c/card at the rear.

Thoughts?

Thoughts.....? Your dealer does not know how to properly align your belt. Or, they were having a bad day and just did sloppy work. Even the manual says that the belt must not ride on the flange. Your original belt was adjusted correctly. Your dealer belt experience is not unique. I had the same exact problem. After paying, riding home and noticing the maladjusted belt, I went back to the dealer. They tried to fix it but it wasn't any better. Told me that was the best they could do. That's when I learned how to properly adjust the belt tension and alignment myself. Good luck..... Jim

Just to be sure, you looked at it after going forward, not reverse, right?

looks like your going to have to pull off some plastic. there is a part # stamped into side of pulley. if you don't have the grey pulley, its not the correct one. plus you need that spacer / washer on inside. probably going to have to use mirror to inside of flange

Cheers. Stopped for a late lunch. Been busy....

Decided to drop the rear wheel, took it down to get it swapped out with new rubber.
While its off I will replace the rear brake pads.
I will pick it up this arvo. BTW its late lunch time - tomorrow for you guys. 13 November.

1-2 credit card width to inner flange on rear pulley when traveling in the forward direction. Changing the front pulley should not have made any difference at the rear wheel if done correctly.

I hear ya Ron. The 1st photos made me think they didn't put the washer on. The way the belt is tracking. Maybe the pulley is a bit close?
I will button it up tomorrow and set it up. Running mode.
Then watch the tracking after some riding, if it walks out on the front again, then I guess belt off and remove the front pulley and have a squiz. .

Very nice Starfire. Should be some nice putting around on that. I had a 1968 BSA Royal Star 500. Nice comfortable ride. Darker Blue color.

Nice! I had a 69, 441 Victor. What a BEAST! My buddies called the seat a 'Canned Ham'. Everyone wanted to ride it. But no one wanted to start it. If you got it wrong, it could throw you over the handlebars. The right side shift and left side brake were very difficult to get used to. I never really did. If I needed to stop quickly, I would pull in the clutch and mash down on both sides at the same time.

Hahaha…..if I sat on that BSA 250 I would have had to have it surgically removed these days, Iso.
Although, I did have a Ducati Desmo 250 as my first bike, way back. I had to sit well back on the seat to accommodate my length, which had an unfortunate reaction when taking off from traffic lights on a hill. I gunned it a bit to get away quickly, the Desmo shot out from under me as the front wheel lifted vertically, and due to my long legs I ended up sprinting across the intersection effectively holding the Desmo vertically in front of me…….an experience I, and those around me, would never forget. Fortunately, it took a lot longer to get a Box Brownie out to take a photo than it does with today’s phones, or that image would probably STILL be making the rounds hyea:

Too funny. The PO was scared of it, apparently, Bobs Mrs didn't inquire further.
I'm thinking possibly it was getting it started. I spotted a de-compression lever on it.
But nether sat on it or saw it running. Bob was busy and I was on a mish. I will get a closer look at some stage.

Well its all buttoned up and I set the belt using a jack and in gear.
Ensured the belt sat central in the front pulley.
Tightened the axle while rolling in 1st gear.
Re-checked the belt tension.
All good. Went for a ride

Get back. Drove in forwards.

Ya know that belt is back over on the outside of that replacement pulley. :gaah:
I'm not convinced the Tech placed the washer on the inside.

So... Tomorrow I will pull that pulley and have a look.
If the washer is there, thinking I will add another to push the pulley out so it sits more central.

Um... The problem is the front pulley. I set it up correctly in the middle of the front pulley. Ride a bit and it tracks out away from engine.

Its Binding. There is a hot rubber smell, and a noise. Photos 2 and 3 show the problem.

I will attack it tomorrow morning - bout 10 hrs time.
I have already loosened the retaining bolt and obtained a mechanical puller set this arvo.

Anybody know the dimensions of the washer in the recall set offhand?

I think you're maybe a little worried about nothing! I would get it like Ron said, a couple cards from the flange that will get it off the flange in the front and ride it. You're trying to put lipstick on a pig, for no reason at all. With all of the troubles everyone's having with these sprockets the last thing I would want to do is put a washer in there on top of the spacer. that belt on mine rides just like yours one side of one, other side on the other, thats just the way it works, it's the way they have the motor in line with the rear wheel. If I was going to be that anal to line it up, I would have another spacer machined to set the whole thing in place. But I am not that anal. :dontknow: Good luck!!!
