Battery Tender Question

I have a 2015 RT Limited and read that you can put your battery tender thru the cigarette lighter by moving the number 6 fuse to number 7 fuse which allows the cigarette lighter to have current all the time. Is this an acceptable way to use the battery tender or have others found this to have negative effects? also any recommendations on which battery tender to purchase?

I use the Deltran Battery tender plus it is both a charger and maintainer. I have a pigtail that comes out of left side front wheel well that works good for me.

Shouldn't be an issue other than if you leave anything else plugged into the other power outlet, (if you have it), that we always be on also.

I agree. three winters now and no issues. By far the easiest way to maintain your battery.

I have Gerber Heated gear with the power cord hooked direct to the battery. I also have a connecter that allows me to plug Battery Tender into the same power cord if need be. Simple, power cord serves two purposes.

Well....

The best way is still a direct connection to the battery. You should have an inline fuse on the connection for safety as well. I am leary of using the cigarette lighter method unless you are using only a tender..jmo...:thumbup:

I use the cigarette lighter socket for my Spyder, Valkyrie, and truck. Easiest way to do it.

I move the fuse from the keyed position, to the hot position at the end of the riding Season, and then move it back again at the start of the next Season! :thumbup:

As others have said it's no problem using the power outlet for a battery tender. That's what I do. Like Bob says, use only a tender. You don't want to try to do a higher amp charge since the fuse is only 5 or 10 amps. As long as what you get is a quality battery charger/maintainer with an output of 1.5 to 2 amps you'll be OK. Battery Tender is a good brand. I have one from NAPA Auto Parts that works very well. I'd stay away from Harbor Freight as I have read they have destroyed batteries, but some use them successfully.

Have a Battery Tender Jr on the 12v plug on my 15 RTS-S . Never any issues. Have BT's newest 5.0a charger/tender unit on my wife's STL on the 12v which has blown the F7 fuse once because the tender was plugged in when I mistakenly inserted the cig lighter plug. Reversing the order works without any problems
