• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Battery Dead

Went out a week ago to start missus' RS. Deader than a doornail. Tried to recharge, old battery wouldn't hold charge. Put in new battery, tried to start today, guess waht dead again. Any ideas??

You have something drawing power, could be the bike has a fault or one of the mods could be stuck on, heated seats? You need to take a multimeter to the thing and see where the power draw is coming from. Check negative terminal and make sure it is secure. Other then that, take care not to zap yourself and good luck.

When you hooked up the new battery did you notice it arc or jump a spark to the terminal as you connected it?

Yes I did. Matter of fact I posted a thread questioning the spark and got the answer that was normal. Connected pos. first then neg.... Spark was when I connected the neg

Most modern vehicles will arc a bit when the negative terminal is attached. Normally this spark is weak, but it is hard to tell if it is stronger unless it is real strong. Unfortunately, it is also tricky to test the current draw. A typical multimeter must be connected in-line to test DC amperage. Even if you do test it, and see you have a certain draw, say 100 milliamps, there are no specs to tell you what is normal. If you have accessories added, I would start by pulling the fuses for those farkles, and see if things improve.

There are some important things for you to consider. First, was the new battery properly and fully charged before you tried to start the machine. Merely activating a battery will not make it usable. It needs to be charged overnight before use. I'd put it on the charger overnight before I cried foul. Make sure the terminals are clean and tight, and that the rear frame ground (negative jumper terminal is tight. I'd also check the battery voltage at the battery and at the jumper terminals to make sure it is the same. If not, you have a bad connection. If the voltage is 12.7 or greater, the battery is OK and your starter or connections are the problem. One other silly question...is your kill switch in the RUN position? This has tricked more than one owner. As a last check, you could hook the Spyder to a charger overnight, then try to start the next day. If it is still no go, you probably have a different problem than the battery itself...unless you gat a bad battery for the new one.

Yes on a little sparking, of course the more dim the garage may be, the brighter the sprark will seem, you probably wouldn't see it in the daylight. The power is always flowing to a few areas on this machine in regards to stock circuitry(dash, computers, security), but should be no more draw than a watch battery could handle when switched off. With the machine switched off and the positive lead connected, you should be safe checking the DC amps with a multi-meter that can handle up to 10 amps.

a good way to check for a currant draw if you dont have a multi meter is to disconnect negative battery terminal and connect a test lite between ground and neg bat terminal, if test lite lites there is enough draw to kill battery

I must say, I am fortunate. I leave my Spyder (I'm ashamed to say) sitting for long periods and never had a problem (other than my cheap HID's but that's another story).

I have not ridden my Spyder since August! :yikes: I have tried to start it a few times trouble shooting my stupid cheap HID light issue and that was it for all this time. (Did I mention that some MORON put Cheap HID's in my Spyder? All kinds of issues).

No battery charger, no tender, no nothing! Jumped on it today and it fired right up. Moved it out of the garage and turned it off. Fired right up again 10 minutes later to head out.

Not sure why I don't have the same dead battey issues others have but I sure am happy about it!

I wish I knew, as you saw my battery is D.O.A and will need replacing on my RS . My last ride on the RS was just over two weeks ago. Think I'll try your battery this time. :doorag:
