Battery Cable?

This cable (see below pic) is in my frunk behind the lining adjacent to where the battery cover is on my 2014 RTL. I assume it is for charging via a tender, but I'm not sure. Is it? The owner's manual doesn't say. Can it be used for jump starting?

If anyone is curious, I pulled the cover off and it is wired directly to the battery with an inline 3a fuse, so as many of you said - tender! Not for jump starting. Thanks for the help.

Not sure, check it with a volt meter or follow it to see where it goes or comes from.

Some dealers do a setup for a battery tender, i don't believe it comes from the factory that way.

Like Joe said your dealer may have installed that, and if they did that was nice, I'd call and ask them that way you know for sure. If it is you can also use it for heated gear.

Very easy to check. Unzip liner, if it is protruding from behind the large square panel with two torx screws in the top... it's for the tender.

That pigtail looks exactly like the one on my RT-S that is for the Battery Tender Jr. my dealer installs on all Spyders. The dealer simply ran it out the top of the battery cover door rather than drilling a hole in the frunk. The pigtail has a 7.5 amp inline fuse. From looking at the size of the battery cables I would not attempt to jump start the roadster through the pigtail as the cold cranking amps of the jumping battery would blow the fuse in the pigtail. Don't know if a trickle charger would feed current at low enough amperage to safely use the pigtail to charge the battery should one need to.

If your 14 is like the 13, there are posts at the left side of the byke just above the frunk. You pull the one plastic rivet and you see a red plastic cover over the hot post, and there is a ground post inboard of that IIRC.

Fuse is too small for heated gear. I always replace with 15 amps. With jacket, gloves, and pants you will exceed 10 amps. Will still be usable for Battery Tender and have a margine for heated gear.

Wire gauge alone is to small to attempt jump start! Tender most likely. My 13 has above mentioned post, won't hurt to ask dealer, could be a bonus find out what tender they use, your 1/2 way set up.

Like has been said, probably dealer installed for a battery tender. Trying to use it for jump start will fry it good, if the fuse doesn't blow first.

Thanks everyone for the info. I haven't pulled it apart or checked with the dealer, but I will. The important take away is don't use it for jump starting. I appreciate the advice.

Have one of these on our 2012 but it was under the seat and when I checked it was hooked to the battery with a fuse so I use it for the battery tender.

My dealer ran it out on the wishbone and zip tied it for easy connection for my Schumacher trickle charger
