• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. BajaRon...BRP update?

I was hoping this post would include a photo of me happily standing next to my Spyder with functional Power Steering and a Parking Brake that released first time, every time. But alas, it was not to be.

Ben (service manager for Alcoa) called me today. I must say communication has been fantastic this week. Even bad news is better than no news.

They installed the "Magic" part and attempted to flash the BUDS. That is where my latest problem ocurred. Correct me if I am wrong but the ECM is where this all takes place...?

Anyway, whatever controls the computer will not allow them to flash the BUDS. Ben told me there are supposed to be 5 diagnostic/computer areas that can be accessed. Sounds like a menu to me. My Spyder is offering access to 4 areas but will not allow them access to the 5th area, which is where they need to go to make the software upgrade.

So, they are again, stuck. They will contact BRP and see what is up. Best senerio now is a fix by Tuesday. This is me talking now because Ben didn't promise me anything except that they would be working with BRP to get this fixed and they would let me know Tuesday where things are.

Hmm...Bike Week didn't seem so close when I took my Spyder in on January 17th. Still, it does appear that Alcoa has been doing everything they could and the hang-up(s) have not been their fault.

I've made an appointment with NMM for his depression & stress managment counciling class.
But until then, it's back to , :banghead: and :bdh:. If anyone needs help with any of these 3 areas let me know...I'm getting to be an expert!

BUDS is the utility and diagnostic software, and the ECU is what would be reflashed. Seems strange that your troubles can't be diagnosed, as it's my understanding that vehicle information from the ECU is downloaded directly to BRP when the dealer connects to the system. Even if the dealer can't figure it out, one would think someone at BRP would have a clue.....:dontknow:

Ok, not too hip on my terminology. I need to pay more attention to the details. Too much going on these days.

They said that the 5th deminsion (getting Sci-Fi) just was not available. Sounds like a computer menu with some selections grayed out. I know that everything goes back (or reports to) BRP. Since service is closed Monday, it will be Tuesday before BRP can get involved.

Hopefully, it is a simple glitch and not that I need a new ECU!

What is that song? Monday, Monday... Can't trust that day...

Until Tuesday, I must focus on what I'm best at, which is , :banghead:, and :bdh:

The very first thing they should have done when they looked at it was to hook it to the BUDS. That would have told them if there were any error codes to start with. If they would have done that a month ago they would have known they had a problem. :chill:

Yes, I know. I was very surprised when they told me last Saturday was the 1st time they'd hooked up to the BUDS. I suppose I could have pointed out the obvious to them.

They are supposed to be the experts. Why is it that we know more about the Spyder than the guys that get paid to know?

Ahh... my head hurts! I must be standing too close to the brick wall again...:banghead:

Ok, let's just say that maybe a certain dealer's Spyder trained tech quit some time back. And let's say that maybe a non-Spyder trained tech might be working on a particular Spyder at such a dealership.

Could it be that this unspecified tech might not know that he/she should hook up to and read the BUDS diagnostic display on a Spyder as soon as it comes in for service?

Could it be that he/she might actually wait 4 weeks to hook up and read the BUDS only to discover that something is wrong and they can't communicate with or flash the BUDS?

Could it be that this non-Spyder trained tech might use a BUDS cable designed for ohhh...maybe other Can-Am products like water-craft or off road vehicles... not realizing that (though it will plug in to the Spyder and give you some info) you can't communicate with the BUDS

Could it be they don't realize that you must use the BUDS cable specifically designed for the Spyder to get full functionality and communication with the BUDS?

All the makings of a great suspense novel....don't you think?

Oh yeah! They would have called out the SWAT team on me by now. I hope your idiot dealer realizes how badly he needs to bend over backwards to make this right.

First of all, thanks to all for the moral support you've given me. I appreciate it.

Well, guess what Ben (service manager for Alcoa) told me today...The BUDS magically worked just fine all of a sudden. Can you say "Plug in the right cable?"

And they were able to flash the BUDS with the GPS update. But it didn't fix the problem.

So, now they are replacing the actual Power Steering unit itself. And they are doing it today, with expected completion in time for me to pick it up tommorrow (if no further issues are found).

I find it surprising that they would not have the relatively cheep GPS or Magnetic sensor (both less than $100 dealer cost I believe) in stock but they would have a $1500 power steering unit in stock.

Putting things together it must have been the steering unit that we were waiting on, not the GPS. I did think it odd that the ordering/shipping manager at Alcoa said the part was "Very Expensive" when neither of the parts they told me they'd ordered were over $100 their cost.

According to Ben, I will have all the components related to the Power Steering replaced now (except for the ECM, which seems to be fine).

Should know tomorrow. If the power steering unit fixes the problem I'm wondering if any of the other replaced parts were really bad.

My apology for saying--->They could easily fail at BUDS right at the beginning. I use laptops on aircraft and at home of course. I have seen many styles of application start-ups that also require a step by step exit. I think this machine is to much for a M/C shop...it resembles more of an ASE cert mechanic. I just don't think they get it, I think my spyder is being passed around. Sounds like Alcoa is trying!

I have not seen the start-up and exit, but it's probably not much different than many home applications on a laptop...you can damage both the computer and harware your linking to if you don't follow the process.

Ahhh....now don't be giving me information like this~ I'm already having to go to stress reduction therapy as it is.

The real problem was letting Lamont ride my Spyder...Ignorance IS bliss!
