BAD KEY

WOW yesterday as I was getting ready to leave work climbed on my Spyder turned the key
and nothing then across the interment cluster BAD KEY.

I turned it off and walked away down the parking lot came back and it happened again.
One more time walked away only a little farther away came back and it happened again.

I decided to walk up to the building and changed my mind went back and tried again.
My Spyder finally started, left the parking lot to get on the Highway to go home and
traffic was at a dead stand still.... just down the on ramp still on the on ramp someone
crossed the solid White Line and hit a Motorcycle rider WOW did My Spyder
save my life or a coincident :yikes: got home and there was nothing on the news still do not know if
the rider is OK Not the way to start a weekend.

Hay yall keep the rubber-side down and alwayswatch out for that guy as he's not watching out for you.

Wow...!!

Worth checking with the dealer about the key. There have been issues with the DESS and keys and ignitions needed to be changed on certain models. Yours may be one of them. You were lucky in that you finally got away long enough for the computers to reset but this can get worse. Glad you were not involved in the accident but hope the one that was will be OK.

Time to get out the spare key and get another made.

The transponder in the key has a range of 1 inch or less so walking across the parking lot was not needed.
The ignition switch needs to be off for 30 seconds to reset for the next try.

JT, You need to have your dealer look at this if you're still under warranty. This happened to me twice, the second time would not reset. Needed tow to dealer and they replaced both the ignition switch and the DESS unit. Suspect that this is not a cheap fix if out of pocket. HOPEFULLY this is now fixed never to return again. Have ~10000 miles since it was repaired. Good luck:pray:

The OP has a 2012 and you have a 2014. Two different systems with different problems. He will more likely have a bad key rather then a bad DESS unit.

For peace of mind id carry my spare. The chip in key is uber fragile have you had unfortunate drops, or strikes to it? Get dealer to check out to be sure. Only other thing is some one reported key not working if the key was too cold :dontknow: Dont sound like your case, but it did save you from being part of or witnessing the wreck you passed. Take it as you like:pray:

Did you get a "Bad Key code? See picture:
attachment.php
Do you still have any warranty left on your spyder?

Sounds like it is a" DESS" issue.

Take a picture the next time you a the "BAD KEY code, take it your dealership, have your dealership OPEN UP A CASE WITH BRP, IT IS UNDER "
WARRENTY".

I have a thread going about the "Dess issue" The thread is titled " DESS KEY CODE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ( Posted by Deanna777) there is a lot of great info. and pictures on that thread, that I posted/ and other spyder owners have posted. Please post on that thread. To keep that thread going. (the above thread is long.) Deanna

Sometimes, things happen so that worse things do not happen to us. Maybe Someone was looking out for you this time.

If the problem persists, time to have the key checked out.

I got an email from a BRP TECH saying " We have had cases where a cell phone or magnetic card, placed near the ignition switch cause this. This includes any device that may emit some type of frequency". Deanna

:banghead: Well guys thanks for all your input. Took my Spyder to the dealer and while they were checking it out the DESS failed.

I was having a high idle problem and they told me my cold air intake caused the problem some lines split I tole them I know several
people that run the same intake with out any problems.

Anyway here goes another grand to keep my Spyder on the road $h1+. 50,000 miles with as many problems as I have had is not a very good
track record for BRP, I put 78,000 miles on my Honda Shadow the only thing I did was gas tires and one set of breaks. The don't have the parts
so the Spyder will have to set in the shop for a week while the parts come from Canada :yikes::mad::banghead: jtpollock

Thanks for the update, and luckily you were at your dealership when the DESS failed, and not out on the road somewhere.

Tell your dealership that your DESS is under warranty ( do you still have warranty on your spyder?)

Can your dealership over night the parts, instead of having your spyder in the shop for a week?

Sorry to hear & as many people have had the DESS issue, warranty or not you should get some brake from BRP. Worth bugging customer service about. Best of luck

,

JT sorry for your troubles, ask your dealer to open a claim with BRP; the worst they can do is say no!!

There seems to be a lot of key /DESS problems with these bikes.

If your dealer refuse
s then I would contact BRP CARES. Perhaps someone who has a better memory than I can come up with the contact number for BRP cares.

I was kind of hoping BRP CARES might see the post and chime in or send me a PM bot it looks like I will try the dealer see what happens.
Time for this old man to say goodnight. jtpollock

It isn't necessary to overnight the unit. Several 1st. generation :spyder2: riders rode hundreds of miles without power steering and incurred no damage to the :spyder2:. JME

Did you try giving your second key some ride time? DESS failures on the first gen models are super rare.
