• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Bad Key, not DESS Error - anyone else? Ideas?

I am pretty new to the Spyder world, but it seems to me everyone is saying its the DESS, or battery for this type of issue. Is it at all possible it's the key (especially it the spare works fine) or just removing it and trying it again. The keys are programed and just maybe the key got an error in the program (virus if you will) I would try having the key in question reprogramed or even just get a new key before assuming there's something wrong with the bike DESS.

The keys are not programmed. They are static and factory encoded. The bike is programmed to accept the key code.

Also this error problem with the DESS module is well known a common in 2014 and newer Spyders.

Send send BRP care an email or call them, OPEN UP a case with BRP, put it thru the warranty.

As jcthorne mentioned, the keys are static, ie passive - it's the Spyder's/Ryker's DESS that 'reads' the code stored on the embedded ROM Chip in the key.... so unless the key's been plugged into a 110/240v power outlet or otherwise had enough (ie, LOTS! :p ) of voltage/amperage run thru it to fry &/or melt the embedded 'Read Only' chip, it's NOT gonna be the key!! :lecturef_smilie:

However, it could be that the Dealer screwed up programming the SPYDER's DESS Module to accept the code that it reads from the key, which means it's still a Spyder/DESS error and not the key!! Aaaand, as you found out by the dealer giving you one key to another machine instead of yours spiderfrog, there's no denying that some Dealers/techs are more than capable of stuffing up the most simple of things, let alone programming the DESS! :banghead:

So, trikermutha & Deanna's recommendation is probably the smartest thing to do.... :ohyea:

When you take it in for warranty make sure you bring both keys to be sure both are programmed to the ecu. If you do have a bad module this would be the first posted on a 2021.
