• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

I recently installed a sound system and siren to my Spyder RS. It's has problems starting. The last message displayed is "bad key". What is the problem? Thank you.

You have the "D.E.S.S. which stands for Digitally Encoded Security System.
Get your D.E.S.S. module changed . Turn on/off immediately for about 4 to 5 cycles, and DO NOT LET THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN.

What year is your spyder?

Hope the above info helps.

Deanna
I have a thread going " KEY CODE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!! this is a long thread with some very use full info.

Bummer.....

If all this started after installing the alarm and sound system it may be that something done then has caused the problem. Try disconnecting the sound system and alarm and see if clears up. If you have a second key try that one as well. Don't recall the RS having issues with the DESS....

:agree: the bad key message can also appear if there is more than one key with a transponder chip:lecturef_smilie: first one read wins:banghead: So when trying spare key try just it have all others well away:thumbup: hopefully the sound system is not interfering.

I have a 2014 ST-S SE5 I purchased new in 2014. The DESS issue just stared happening to me last week.

I do not have a radio or anything like it. I did get a GPS not long ago, but I have only used it once so far, and that was almost a month ago. The only electrical I have done is replacing the reflectors with LED's.

This past Tuesday evening was the worst. It took about 8 times of insert/re-insert, etc.. before it would crank. I will try to remember what you mentioned Deanna about "Turn on/off immediately for about 4 to 5 cycles, and DO NOT LET THE SYSTEM SHUT DOWN.".

Life interrupted back then up until about a year ago, so I have not been able to ride until this year. I hear this happens around the 7-9k mileage and mine is right at 8k...and generally within the 2014 models. So, now it is out of warranty.

I've been reading Deanna's thread and others with theories in these forums about about this mess. Things like it could be the antenna by the ignition, heat and high humidity, other keys with chips next to the spyder key, etc..

I also read where some have replaced the module only to have the issue happen again and they replaced it again, and on and on...

I called my nearest reliable service center (5 hours away), and they said for me to bring it in for a diagnostic check. I really do not want to drive that far just for that.

I really wish this issue would have been resolved. I do a lot of photography when riding, and I do not want to be stranded after taking pics and the key errors out. :banghead:
