• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Back in time with touring bikes

A little over forty years ago my wife and I began to become touring bike enthusiasts. Back in the early to mid-70's there were two publications that were high on your reading list if you were really into seeing the country by motorcycle. One was Road Rider Magazine, started in 1971 but a guy named Roger Hull. Hull was really the first journalist to really write about the touring experience and he is legendary. If you don't know about Roger (who passed away in '95), Google him... you will be amazed at his story.

The other magazine was started around 1974 by a guy named John Warren. It was called Touring Bike and also was aimed at those of us who biked with bags on our machines. Sadly both magazines have passed away but I sure would love to have a magazine or a web site, or both that carried the kind of stuff those books did in their heyday. Rider and Roadrunner are okay but just not the same.

It was most unusual to find a female rider on the road forty year's ago and what spurred this thread was as item I came across in an old file that was clipped from Touring Bike magazine's February'78 issue. It was written by my wife, Penny and if it is legible, I have attached a copy to the thread.

Enjoy!

Some areas had more then others. Woman on Wheels was a all female outfit with many members. Knew of Hazel. Only name I can remember right now (old age is hell) is Betsy Stringfield If I remember her last name right. . Look her up.
Just thought of another one Niki Hero, Ft Walton Beach, FLA 1955 or so. I believe Niki got a 60 year Service award from Woman on Wheels.
AMA Museum in Pickerington, did have a very nice dispaly of woman in Motorcycling. Wheel trhough Time may still one as well. They did a couple years ago.
I like seeing everybody ride their own.

This brings back lots of memories. I pretty much read every motorcycle magazine that I could get my hands on. Unfortunately, in those days I did not have the means to buy the "big stuff." It was 1978 before I started adding Windjammer fairing, bags, and tour trunks to some of the bikes. It has been a heck of a ride, and I have enjoyed it all.
