Back compartment latch won't close or lock

My 2011 RT Limited is now a year old. I just found out on my last ride this past weekend that the back compartment latches won't engage at all. I can't close it or lock it.

Anyone else have this happen to them??

Thanks,:(

You probably did this but just in case try un latching the cover in question, sometimes the latch closes on itself and not the cover.:dontknow:

I don't know if it will apply in your case, but I think there is a service bulletin regarding adjustment of some of these latches. I'd pay a visit to my dealer.

I did pay a visit to my dealer. My RT is only two half months old. The right saddle bag won't snap shut till I push with my leg or knee. Then when I pull the latch half the time I have to push with my knee again. I dealers service kid said not a problem you'll just have to work with it. It may get better with use. What the @:#%

GET IT FIXEd under warranty....

Had the same problem on my 2010 RT....would fall open at the not best times...like on Las Vegas freeway..contribution to hiway one nice ballcap...fortunately my dealer knew there was a problem and got new latches from BRP under replacement. While he was waiting for them to come in he "shorten" the linkage in the hinge...stayed shut tight but had to use fingertips to pull open after releasing with hand latch...got it replaced fixed over a year ago and never a misstep since...
I say from experience that dealers service kid?..nojoke.knows not what he speaks of.:lecturef_smilie:..insist on FIX under warranty NOW...

:agree: There is a bit of tinkering that can be done with htese latches... My "saddlebags" were a bit ornery until I mentioned it to my dealer; fixed at my request!

rear trunk latches

I agree with NancysToy, while my 2010 RT-A was in the shop for a throttle body replacement, a service bulletin came in regarding the latch, and they replaced it under warranty. Shouldn't be a problem for you...

I have been thinking of putting a latch on the outside of my side bags for peace of mind when riding down the road.

Why? I have never known someone to have one come open, unless it was never latched in the first place. If it isn't latched, the alarm should show in the display.

I had the same thing on my 2010 RT till it had a few miles on it. Maybe the rubber seal conformed ? Dunno but I dont have that as often now. But do still have to push with my knee to both open and close at times.

I disagree on part of this Scotty. Mine has come open going down the road and I had to turn around to pick up a cap and jacket. I never had an alarm though. I just happened to catch it in my mirror when it happened. Is that alarm only on the LTD?

I do agree that it only happens if you don't latch it well :)

The alarm is on them all, but a jumper up front was put in the wrong place on many or all of the ones without the ACS button-adjustable suspension, so you may not show the alrm if yours is one of the A&C or standard Spyders...unless you fix the jumper problem. The usual cause of bouncing open going down the road is failure to latch the lid properly, though, although overloaded bags or misadjusted latches could do it. Listen for the click when you close them. The gaskets are so tight on the saddlebags that they will easily hold the bags apparently closed until you hit a bump. Oh, and test your alarm. If it doesn't work with either the saddlebags or topcase open, it should be fixed. I don't know if the dealers know how to do this yet, it was a mystery to them at first. A search here should find the instructions for moving the jumper under the switch panel.

I'll have the guys take a look at it when I take it in next time, oh who am I kidding I'm going to have to make a trip to cowtown and have them actually care about the issue. I am still thinking about an external latch.

Well on the old BMWs with the Krauser bags, we used to use bungee cords...but I suppose that is pretty tacky. :roflblack:

Hmmm.

Well that may very well be the problem then, I do have the A&C but no alarm. Lucky for me it is at the shop now, so I'll have Cowtown take a peek at it. Thanks for the insight! That alarm will be nice to have working. As many posts as I have read on this site and this was the first I have heard of this. It could be a FF helmet that falls out next time!

That will teach me to disagree with you. :opps:
Man Scotty you are indeed the Spyder Professor. I stand corrected!:bowdown::bowdown:

Mine did that one time, just started not closing. I looked at it several minutes and finally realize that a small piece of plastic from the bottom of my wife's brush dropped in the area on top of where it closes and was preventing it from shutting. It was small and hard to see.
