I had an experience today that shook me up and want to pass my thoughts along to my friends here.
Coming home from a DDS appointment today I was traveling along a surface street here that has a 45 MPH speed limit. Very typical for my area. Going through an intersection with a solid green light that has been green for some time. A red-light runner blew through the light coming from my right at full speed (45+ MPH). I found myself suddenly looking at a direct collision with the drivers side of the offending vehicle.
I took evasive action. Hit the brakes HARD and swerved to the right. I have been driving for more than 60 years and this is the very first time I have experienced maneuvering a vehicle while anti-lock brakes are engaged while at the same time steering around an offending car. Tires were squealing and brakes were chattering. I managed to miss the red-light runner by a couple of feet and not much more! BTW I was driving my Old Buick Enclave. Old Buick came out of the situation like a champ. I really believe the anti-lock brakes saved me from crashing by allowing me to brake and swerve at the same time.
Today, I was lucky. Got home and tonight's cocktail was especially good. I would like to think my riding skills would have resulted in the same positive outcome had I been on a bike. Bottom line..... Stay aware, stay safe..... Jim
