• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Average MPG Display ... ?

We got our new Spyder RT-S two weeks ago and I'm still learning it, but one thing I was surprised to find (or not find) was a trip computer that would show average MPG. My trip computer screen shows average speed and time, but not average MPG. I thought maybe the display had been turned off but I can't figure out how to activate it and I can't find any information anywhere else, including the manual. Spyders either do show, or can show, or did show, average MPG at one time because you can see it in the display in this video at about 1:30:

My 2017 screen looks exactly the same as the video except that it's blank where the video shows the MPG display. The video is from 2009, so maybe the feature has been removed since then -- but why would they remove a feature? Or, am I just too dense to figure out how to display it?

And yes, I know how to calculate my average MPG on my own; I just think it's neat if I can get the machine to do it for me.

As I see it....

there is none...that I know of. MPG's is a big thing here and everyone calculates them some well some not so well but there is no feature like that built in to the dash monitoring system. It would need more information to calculate it. It is hard enough to do it yourself and everything affects is....Where you are, what gas you use, weather conditions, altitude, how full you get your tank, single double trailer, terraine etc, etc There are programs and apps (spydercodes if you can still get it) that will do that as long as you feed it the data needed...

Welcome to the spyder world and this most informative site....you can find the answers here....

I have one of those on my 17 Subaru Outback. Saves me the compute after filling. I still compute mpg on the :spyder2::f_spider:'s though. That's the accountant in me.

He is right. Check out the video at the 1:30 frame. It shows an mpg gauge. The computer has all the inputs it needs to calculate mpg so why doesn't it?

Seriously!

why, because we might have to leave off a DESS system that I've never heard of stopping a thief, but will certainly stop your spyder.
or we might have to ditch the whimpy stereo we charge big bucks for, even though it's lame.

What? Seriously, the OP has a valid question

The RTs never had an average MPG function...Your video is pre-production, and they like to say that "specifications are subject to change without prior notification." nojoke

They thought about it; but decided to no include it.

Wife's Chrysler minivan had the function but it was only a snapshot -- one of those useless wastes of electronic information.

I've asked this question myself many times. As others have said, all the inputs are there, it's just a matter of programming.
However, I don't think they EVER showed MPG. The display shows the average MPH. What value that has, I'm not sure.

As far as the MPG thing goes, I use the Spyder Codes app on my phone.
I use it at each fill up, I input the odometer reading as in 30,298, the price of the fuel and the gallons purchased.
The program does the calculation, and will give you records in table or graph format so that you can see the history.
Of course that app does a lot more, but, I like it for tracking fuel use.

This is common on cars. The technology exists. The Spyder computer and display have the capability. So why is it disabled?

Just another cost cutting measure to keep the overall costs of the :spyder2: low and affordable. :roflblack::roflblack::roflblack::roflblack:

Great idea Joel

Thanks

Thanks for the welcome and the information. It's still kind of puzzling why they wouldn't bother programming the last few bits, but whatever ... it's still a fun ride and after all, I bought the Spyder to ride, not to worry about gas.

STEREO ????

. In my experience with the BRP stereo/radio it's the speakers not the HEAD ( stereo ) unit .... My JBL's rock. .... clear, clean, & very loud if I want them ...... Mike

Which JBLs did you get? Front and Rear?

Blueknight911, what speakers did you get to replace the factory speakers? Front and rear? Any modifications required?

Mostly because MPG numbers are fairly meaningless in real life driving. I'm working on graphing my mpg for the last two years and will post them when I get them finished. Essentially, MPG goes up and down like a kid on a trampoline. Even the graph of a 4 fill running average is very erratic. I may do a 10 fill running average to see how much less erratic that graph is.

In my experience while using the Spyder Codes app, in my completely unscientific data collection, I have come up with a few conclusions.

First allow me to point out that I have a 2013 RTL SE5 (30K miles) and a 622 trailer, if you have a 1330 and six speed then your results will vary dramatically. I use premium fuels with a small bit of StarTron Ethanol fluid at each fill.

I will almost always receive 28 - 30.5 MPG. This will vary depending on my ryding style, roads and such. I can say that I have about 50 RPM higher with the 622 behind me and it seems to equate to a loss of about 1.5 - 2 MPG. I believe that my biggest loss of MPG is on the highway, where most vehicles seem to get better mileage on the highways, I actually lose 2 - 3. Not a real secret, on this website they have called it the missing gear for some time.

That my friends is just my humble input, you don't have to like it, they are only my simple conclusions.

Joe
