Automatic Volume Compensation

Has anyone had issues with the "Automatic Volume Compensation" on their RT? I backed out of the garage this morning to let the RT warm up before I left for work, I always turn the volume down on the stereo so as not to annoy my neighbors at 6:30 AM. But once I left and started riding I noticed that the volume was not automatically going up and down, it seemed to stay at the same level when I was riding and when I stopped. Is it possible that this could be something that will simply reset by turning off the RT and restarting again? Won't know for sure if this was a temporary thing or if something is haywire unitl I go home tonight. Any thoughts?:dontknow:

I have mine set to "low". Seems to work well for me. I do have to be moving at a good rate with lots of wind and engine noise for it to start raising the volume. The other two settings crank up the volume too much. Have you tried other settings? If it still doesn't raise volume at the highest setting something is wrong.

The manual doesn't go into to much. This is what is says:

Self-Adjusting Audio Volume
The audio volume level can be self-adjusting according to the automatic volume control setting as set in the PREFERENCES SCREEN.

Go to the Preferences screen then select Audio. The settings for the AVC is under the Audio sub menus. There are for levels to select from.

Bob, we are at 50 days of 100+...I have had 1/2" of rain since January. 99 today, but 102 for Friday and Saturday. On Sat. we are scheduled to ride to breakfast about 80 miles west of here into the beginning of the desert country....106 or so I suspect.

Thanks for the additional information about the radio. I played with the fader, bass & treble settings--and still feel like the radio on the RTS is junk. Maybe the volume adjustments will be the trick.

"Junk"?? Maybe a bit strong; but for sure it doesn't have "Clarion" anywhere in its gene pool... :gaah: It also beats having to listen to the Missus prattle on from the pillion! :thumbup: Uh-oh... :shocked: Gotta go!

I had a real nice Harmon Kardon radio on my HD Ultra Classic with special replacement speakers and it sounded awsome when sitting in the garage running on the battery. When I got the bike up to highway speeds the stereo sounded like crap no matter how I set it. It's the same for the Spyder stereo. Sounds great when sitting still but add the engine, exhaust and wind noise into the equation and it back to sounding like crap again. The only way around it is to use headphones.

Not trying to insult anyone's intelligence or even argue that the Spyder's stereo is sub-par, but if you think about it, when you're in a car with all the windows rolled down and the stereo on, you have to have the volume pretty high to hear it clearly, and after awhile it starts to give you a headache because you are contending with 2 loud noises now, wind and stereo. There are so many factors to getting a great sound out of an audio system (wiring, speakers, amp, etc), especially one on a bike. For me the biggest factors are speakers and amp, then if the sound is still crap, it's pretty much just a crappy stereo system. :sour:

:agree: But the GoldWing's Clarion system still sounds way too much better... :gaah: I don't think that the Spyder's system is really all that bad; it just could be better!

I have the same problem, it turns to be a glitch with my digital display. It will reset to zero on it own every so often. I think it happens when I access the milage meter to reset after a fill up.

My AVC has turned itself off 3 or 4 times in the few months I've had the RT .

I've not had any issues with my AVC. I set it to high, that way I don't have to mess with turning the volume up - if it's too loud, it's much easier to mute it than it is to raise the volume while ryding.

As many know, I have a Gold Wing Motor Trike. My GW radio and CB are much better than my RT. I can hear my GW Clarion system (OEM) at all but insane speeds (over 85+). The transmit and receive on my CB is 2X my RT. I ride with the same lead rider (I sweep) and talk to him with both machines on different weekend rides...I have a full BRP system and Chatterbox system hooked into the Wing. I wear FF helmets with headsets on both scoots..I am thinking J&M is in my future.

There is not much better than the Goldwing audio system. In all fairness, though, it is a bit like comparing apples and oranges. The Wing is a lot quieter behind the fairing than the Spyder. Different aerodynamics, and a different distance to the windshield. I don't think anything will give decent audio quality on a Spyder (or many other motorcycles) but a system with helmet speakers. JMHO

One thing that Teddy noticed that others may want to try, is.........

In the audio sub-menu, try setting it to "SMALL SPEAKERS"

We thought much the same as most here until we tried this adjustment & now, I think Teddy is sorry that we found this. I usually wear ear-plugs (Teddy refuses) & have the "AVC" set to high & the system sucked until I found the "SMALL SPEAKER" setting. Now, we cruise to tunes all the time & are loving it. Even when Ryding with other Spyders (usually audio-less RS's) they've commented how well they could here our system at stop signs/lights & it made them wish they had one on their Spyders. Not that it's perfect, but for stock, out of the box, it's not all that bad, IMHO.
