Has anyone really changed what they wear when riding their Spyder based on what others have said on here? I believe we are all old enough to know what we feel is necessary and comfortable with for our protection when riding. I've personally have made no changes. Actually I have, I've removed the protection pads in one of my jackets, and the pads from my kevlar jeans. I'm just curious.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with reinforcing to be safe when riding, regarding those pesky cagers, which you are probably one, and the different gear available; but, IMHO, I think there are those that go overboard, again, and again, and again..................................

I guess that's my rant, which I think I'm allowed.

I've bought more gear

I have actually purchased more gear for different temperatures. Previously I was too hot to wear the appropriate gear, so I bought some heat appropriate gear to wear. I still run to the store in shorts now and then, but I also know the risk.

there is only one thing i ever changed, and it was not from here or any other forum. it was from my accident in 08. i used to wear a 1/2 helmet all the time except winter. when i went down at 10 MPH, i was wearing a denim jacket and a 3/4 helmet. i totaled the helmet. if i was wearing the 1/2 helmet i would of had road rash on the side of my face. so ever since then i wear a 3/4 helmet no matter how hot it is out there

Have not changed any of my riding equipment, especially the Kevlar. Depending on how you get hit or by what, you can still go Ass-Over tea kettles off a Spyder! And that road seems to be a lot harder than it was 30 years ago. All ready spent a year in the hospital because of an accident 40 years ago and I was still stupid enough to get back on Motorcycles! Its a disease, it got to be.:gaah:

Haven't changed any gear since getting a Spyder. Well, I bought a mesh jacket with three different liners. The liners roll up compact and they beat layering up like the good old days.

I did change gear back when I was on two wheels...

Hubby and I were at a blind four way stop, couldn't see around the corner for the tall weeds. I was on the high side, he on the low. We stopped, listened and started to make a right hand turn. At the same time a little old lady driving in the opposite direction had started making a left hand turn, cutting the corner.

The first thing I saw was the middle of her car grill. Couldn't go right, Hubby was there, turned a sharp left, gunned the engine and popped the bike off the curb avoiding the car. First time I caught air. Next thing I remember, I was about ten feet from my bike in the tall weeds.

The bike was ridable and only damage I received was a couple compressed disks on the right side of my neck from the DOT helmet. Tried to ride with DOT helmets after that but the neck pain got bad after a few hours.

For those who know me, now you know why I ride like I do...

Back in the day...

we use to ride in tshirts and jeans..but now I wear reinforced pants, jacket and gloves. I have cheated death enough times to know I would rather sweat a little and still be able to ride another day.

After one bad experience, I "dress for the slide, not for the ride". Drives my wife nuts when I insist that she gear up. Small price to pay for safety. JIMHO.

I haven't changed any of my riding gear since I purchased my Spyder 2 years ago! I have been riding for 41 years so I have tried a lot of different gear. I still ride on two wheels very regularly. I just purchased my new 2017 Harley Street Glide 10 days ago. I go for comfort but safe is a large part of the equation!!

On the spyder, I will wear regular shoes, and a 3/4 helmet about 1/2 the times if the ride is less than 20 miles. When on 2 wheels,it is almost always full face modular helmet and over the ankle shoes or boots,along with all the rest of the gear (jackets, jeans,etc.).

I wear what I want and nothing that has been said anywhere has made me change my mind. I dress for the temperature for the most part. When it is hot out, I generally am in shorts and a tank top. I know the risks and I am willing to take them.

I do what I want. No one has influenced me one way or the other on what to wear. It is a personal choice for each person. Some dress "safer" than others--that is a personal choice.

I dress for the weather. Here, it does not get much over 70 so I do not have to get down to sandals and skivvies to be comfortable. :roflblack::roflblack:

Season start, the heavier winter riding pants with liners come out. The pads are removed. The pants don't fit my parts where the padding is supposed to go. Kevlar lined or Carhart double padded jeans for most of the "in between" seasons.

We always wear engineer style riding boots.

Always, a jacket. Heavier jacket with liner to start. As the weather warms--the liners come out. We removed them this week. Have leather, textile, and mesh. None have the protective pads in them. I have a whole box of assorted pads for jacket and pants.

Always gloves. I go from heavy winter to thin fingerless, and back to heavier as the seasons progress.

Helmets always. We use mostly full modular. Linda cannot use the full face because of claustrophobia. Our modular do not have chin bars attached, but we do use the pull down face plates.

I am thinking we are not going to fall over. The "bad one" for me would be someone crashing into our rear at speed--crushing the bike or ejecting the driver. It's out there, but we also try to be proactive and drive defensive. I don't intend to go so fast that I may lose control. Also don't intend driving impaired so that I run up a tree or go ditch diving.

It's a calculated risk, we do our best, but I am not going to armor up to the point where I look like the Michelen Man or, so padded that I cannot bend my arms or legs.

I think we have found our "happy medium" and that is my .03 worth.

You dress for the fall not the look. We always wear a full helmet. The cool thing about owning a Spyder is you don't have to "dress the look".

I had to sell my Harley socks, boots, gloves, shirts, many t-shirts, jackets, pants, bandannas......

If you want a good reason to ware the proper gear look up "THE ROAD RASH QUEEN" sorry it's Dutch or German. this is a good reason to get ride of those shorts and deck shoes. nojoke jtpollock

I wear more gear now than I did in the 70s , my skill level is not what it used to be and my reaction time is probably less , My wife is adamant about riding ATGATT .
I have some great mesh gear for when it gets hot so I can still have my armor on. I feel that if it does happen I will be launched and I want the protection for the slide .
And the older I get the longer I want to be able to ride.
