anyone with a "don't mess with my spyder" system?

So I'm looking for any suggestions on how to "electrify" my :spyder: so that if anyone messes with it while I'm in the store or work the system will shock the pee out of them. Maybe a Taser type of system while it's parked.

I went on my first long ride today with a group and we stopped at a festival. There were 8 bikes so we parked across the street of the event and I backed in and put my parking brake on (2 clicks). We were on a small hill and after we parked we stood around and talked and stretched for about 10 minutes then we walked up the hill to the event.

After we get up the hill a lady on a cell phone said my bike was rolling and her son was down there holding it. The kid told me he didn't want it hitting "a piece of :cus: car" so he held it until help came Luckily another member from my group had gone back down the hill and had re-set the brake and turned the handles so by the time I got back down there everything was fine. (I guess that's another good thing about being a Spyder owner....people notice you!

Now I know good and well I set my brake and it had 10 minutes or so to roll while we were there so do you think it was the brake or someone messing with it? I've never had an issue with the brake before but I have had to "educate" people about messing with my :spyder: without my permission. :gaah: Most people do ask if they can sit on it...especially other bikers, but there are some out that that just climb on or try to climb on. Anyone else had/have this problem?

So I think until the Spyders become more "main stream" and people aren't so curious about it we should have some sort of "aversion therapy" for those inconsiderate clods out there that don't respect other people's property.

I assume you're half kidding about what you described. Don't go there... you could lose everything you owned (now and future) in the event someone was hurt or killed.

Plus, if it was a kiddo (whose parents were really at fault for lack of control), how would you feel?

:agree: Don't be vindictive, it could bite you on the behind. Use an alarm system if need be.

Reminds me of a story my old man told about when he was a kid. There was an old man who drove his Model T to town every Sunday to buy the newspaper. My Dad and his brother, being the tweenage terrors they were, thought it would be great to rig up a Model T coil to the door handle to shock the old gent. They diod so, and when the guy came out and grabbed the handle he got shocked...and fell over on the sidewalk, out cold. My Dad and my uncle thought they killed him, and ran home and hid in the barn for hours. They found out later he had just fainted, but they never pulled a practical joke again as long as either of them lived.

A couple of years ago My Boss Hoss Trike was parked just outside of Walmart. It was just before Christmas, and there was a Salvation Army guy outside and he stopped me and asked a few questions. When I come out of the store he told me a young mother has set her 2 or 3 yr old daughter on it to take her picture. As she was getting off she got her hand against the chrome cover over the headers. Can you imagine how hot the headers are on a V8 motor. She supposedly burnt her hand real bad. They never entered the store. and they supposedly went to the emergency room. I know I had burnt skin on my cover. I bet they never again messed with someones bike.

Well--- if you electrified it--- the young man wouldn't have been able to help stop it from running away. My parking brake doesn't seem to work correct right now--- only time I use it is for warming the bike up while in neutral while on a slope. Leaving the bike in gear is the best policy.

I have an alarm--- but rarely use it.

With a taser type system - welcome to prison.. The lawsuits alone would make it a huge headache. An alarm would make sense, I haven't had any issues, but everyone lives in different areas. You'll figure something out, good luck.

It was the brake. I had the same thing happen outside a motel in Arkansas. The Spyder decided to go for a spin on its own. Backed itself out went across the parking lot made a U turn and backed itself into a parking spot on the other side of the lot and stopped rolling. Helpful and amazed bystanders hit the kill switch.

The parking brake is the most ill designed system on the early Spyders.

I am not a big fan of tazering people for touching an inanimate objects. I keep hoping somebody steals mine so I can get a new RT.

. . . . until you forget to deactivate the security system and get your Spyder.

Every Spyder seems to be a little different, and there is a lot of variety in the parking brakes between machines and over time. My two cents is that two clicks is not enough - especially on an incline.

When I park on an incline and set the brake, while still mounted, I stand and give the handlebars a pull with my whole body to make sure it is set for the conditions. I know on my Spyder, two clicks would not be enough.

I also agree with the good advice above - an automatic punitive device is not a good idea. While I was walking away from my Spyder in a supermarket parking lot, a little ( 3 or 4 years old ) kid broke away from his parents and ran up to the Spyder and tried to get on it. Before his dad could grab him, he burned himself on the exhaust. It was not bad, but it could have been. The parents were very apologetic and I was too, but I can just imagine the terrible consequences for the kid and me if I had tasered him too.

If your parking brake won't hold at 2-3 clicks, it needs to be adjusted. You actually should not be able to push it down more than 2-3 clicks. You may have to do the adjustment fairly often as the brake pads wear. If your brake won't release properly when fully set, try lubing it, or see your dealer. Early Spyders had a parking brake problems, and are eligible for replacement parts. Our brake has performed flawlessly since the service bulletin replacement was performed. We use it every single time the Spyder is parked, and also while warming it up.

I had my parking brake fail before.

There are a few people here with a scorpio alarm system on their bikes. You can do a search and find some info.

First, get your brake checked by the dealer.

I always leave my bike in 1st gear and put the parking brake on. I try to park on leave ground. When I can't I back the bike up so the rear tire is resting on the curb. I've caught people sitting on my bike at the golf course I play at and every time I say to them, " what gives you the right to sit on someones bike with out their approval, how would you feel if I just went and would sit in your car or on your car". I think people feel safer on a Spyder, how many of them would walk up to a Harley and just sit on it. They would be to afraid to because they wouldn't want to be caught from a Harley Dude or Dudette, of fear of getting their head handed to them, but they don't think of that with a Spyder owner, if they even think at all. They just have no respect for other property.
