Anyone ever mounted a RAM ball directly to handle bars?

I was kind of thinking drilling and tapping threads in the the main part that spans out to both sides from the center mount on my 2018 RT handle bars to mount a RAM 1" ball. Anyone ever done that? I am trying to get my phone mounted down closer to the bars. I have fab'd a 1" ball on the back of my ROCKBROS phone holder. Right now it sit out about 3.5-4" from the handle bars. I have a 2" clamp arm that I would offset from the install ball bring the assembly down close to the handle bar. I really like how the ROCKBROS phone holder locks the phone in place, yet can in put in and removed with one hand.

Here is what I use, it can accept different sized balls/attachments in 3 different areas on the mount. But my bars are different on the 2013 Spyder

I used a motorcycle brake/clutch reservoir mount laid sideways and held on with 2 screw type hose clamps. Ram # B-309-1u. I will post a picture later. They also make one that has 2 balls, one on top and one out the side.

I how there are a variety of mounts available, however my question is about drilling and tapping threads in the handle bars. I carry my phone in a belt nite Ize holster, so I do not want to mount anything on the phone it's self. Also the phone is in a shockproof case.

The cross view of bars should be very thin walls and not conducive to enough threads to hold ram ball and not strip out quickly

And doesn't the wires run thru there too? Be drilling into war zone of wires

On my 2020 RTL I drilled a small hole in the cover next to the handlebar controls. I did this on both sides and used a threaded RAM ball mount. It's worked well for over 40k miles and counting. The only mount has a large RAM phone cradle with an iPhone 17 Max on it every ride. It's never wiggled or come loose.

No I never did drill a hole, I used hose clamps instead. I have two balls on my mount I can attach anything I want to the balls. I just happen to have a phone holder on one and a large cup holder on the other. I see in looking at their site they now have a ball mount that is held on by a built in hose clamp. I don't like drilling holes if I don't have to and with the clamps I don't have to. Plus I can remove it and there is no trace.

Regarding the handle bars of the Pre 2020 RT's, the actual round bar ends are short, and each end is clamped in the main cast center piece and those four allen bolts attach it to the steering column. There are two access pieces that fasten to the lower side, one on each side. I fact the access piece could be removed and then one could bolt it on and then reinstall the access piece. I had it off on the Arizona Spyder to correctly clock the rotation position of the left hand control. Getting the screw is not easy however.
