• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Planning a 11,000 mile loop form Michigan to Alaska and back and would appreciate any information, specifically about riding in Alaska. Routes, roads not recommended, things to see, etc, etc.

There's only about 3 highways in Alaska, so routes aren't big issues. Lots of pot holes, so be careful. Rinse your Spyder regularly. There's always mud, and if you don't rinse it off it will be harder to get the color back.

Get a current "Mile Post" book. It gives all the current road conditions and lots of info on routes to ride.

A great read is the North to Alaska thread as well as an earlier thread from Yazz (2011). Yazz a bit more adventurous than most.

There are good roads and not so good. The Milepost is a helpful tool.

One thing to be aware of. There is only one Can AM dealer in AK. Locations in Eagle River and Wasilla. The next nearest dealer is 1500 miles south or 700 miles east. Therefore, I would recommend staying off the "punishing" roads. A tow can cost very big bucks.

A great trip for those who decide to visit.:yes:

Maybe not all of 1500 miles, Dwayne. We saw a dealer in Whitehorse, Yukon Terr., when we went through there. That would be only about 700 miles.

Whitehorse is the eastern one I mentioned. I believe its about 1200 miles from Chugiak. So much for my memory. And I did that ride in 2010 and went south to Skagway. :roflblack: I looked it up on a mileage calculator. 700 miles and change. At least that will cut down on the towing charges.

WARNING, WARNING, WARNING--I am known as very conservative. I do not favor punishing roads, or being broke down hundreds of miles from nowhere.

AAA maps

If you have a AAA membership you can also get their maps for AK, NWT, YT...

I am leaving in 4 weeks on my V Strom for a couple of weeks in YT and NWT. Going to ride the new road to Tuk

Good luck, and have a good time!! I have friends up there, went up and spent some time with them and poked around in a car, OMG it was so nice, say everything but a bear! I found myself driving down the road and rubber necking as much as I could and still keep it out of the ditch! Went by a guy with a 24 ft rv, hauling a suv, off the road over a ditch going up a hill! I wish I could go with you, it would be a great way to see the state in my book! As far as good main tared roads you will not get that lost, not a lot out there, lot of dirt roads! :thumbup:Have FUN!! And take a good camera with a Large mem chip!
