• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Any videos on 2013 RT SE5 clutch replacement? Special tool availability?

A friend of mine has asked me to replace the clutch on a 2013 RT SE5 with approximately 70k miles. I have printed out the clutch section from the shop manual. The procedure does not look difficult. I have tried to find an on-line video of someone who has actually done this job, but so far I’ve been unsuccessful.

Does anyone know if and where a video may be available?

It’s not that a video is really necessary, but may be helpful to provide helpful hints and pitfalls to avoid.

The manual indicates the use of special tool (clutch pack compression tool) to measure and determine the clutch plate free play adjustment plate needed. I’ve searched the internet to find and buy the required tool, but I’ve also been unsuccessful.

Does anyone know where this special tool can be obtained?

Looking at the picture of the tool in the manual it appears to be a rather simple tool that I could possibly make myself, but it would be worth the time savings just to buy one.

A search of Amazon.com for "can-am clutch pack compression tool" found 226 results.

I'm sure most of the results don't apply, but some should match what the shop manual describes/shows.


Edit: I am not recommending that you purchase from Amazon.com, as I personally will never buy anything from. But you can gather a lot of information from looking at what is available on their site.

I looked at the Amazon listings. None matched the recommended CanAm tool for the SE5. eBay lists one, but it no longer available.

Does BRP not have this tool for sale in their parts list? Usually the factory has special tools for sale, though often at a premium.
 
A friend of yours has asked you to replace the clutch in his 2013 SE5 Spyder RT. Why? Are you sure? A new clutch design for the SE5 was introduced for the 2013 year, that is pretty bullet proof.

According to the owner of the bike (and he is the original owner) the bike has had shifting issues, most frequently when the engine comes under a load like when climbing a hill, but sometimes also when just cruising along. The gear indicator will indicate “E” and display an orange transmission warning (I can’t remember the exact wording). He took it to a Can-Am dealer for service and they replaced the gear position sensor and gave the owner a bill for $1200. It made no change and the dealer indicated the clutch is beginning to slip. I took the bike for a ride and the clutch is definitely slipping. The rider is not an aggressive rider and may have been up-shifting too early for the entirety of the 70K ownership. The owner cannot afford to take it back to the dealer, doesn’t enjoy riding it with the transmission issues and was considering junking the bike. That’s when I offered to replace the clutch.

The tool is used in combination with a depth gage to measure the clutch plate free play and subsequently choose the correct adjustment plate(s).
 
Just an update. I did get the special tool which is used to apply pressure to the clutch disk pack to obtain one of the two measurements needed to calculate what size adjustment plate is needed to obtain the 1mm amount of free play. I ordered the clutch pack kit. Besides changing out the clutch disks and the few other items in the kit, I also replaced the seals around the hydraulic piston and cylinder and two springs, one behind the hydraulic piston and the other for the pressure relief. The only difficult part of the job was removing the hydraulic piston as there’s really nothing to grab onto to remove it from the cylinder ring. To my surprise the parts replacement job eliminated all the shifting issues my friend was having. Overall it was an easy job.
