• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Any suggestions on 2022 RT Limited GPS mounting? Wiring? Pictures? Supplier?

I just picked me up a 22 RTL last week, and I am used to having a gps, but none on this bike. I found out that on the RTL 22, the usb cable in the glove box does not and will not charge anything, it's only for hooking up to Garmin Connect. Bad design, should have put a usable charging usb cord also in glove box. Not I have to find a mount for maybe a Garmin Zumo XT, and all of the ones I have seen are ugly, and don't want bike to look like crap. Could I see some pictures of this year and model of bike, and where you got your mount setup from, and maybe cost. Way taking a 3 day trip next week, and would have liked to had it set up for the ride. Thanks
 
I have a 2024 RT S2S I'm using with a Garmin Zumo XT mounted to the handlebars.

The ring and ball post around the handlebar is an Arkon MC25MMB.

There is a "U" bolt clamp and post with a mounting ball that comes with the Garmin, but the "U" bolt wasn't big enough to fit around the handlebars on my 24 S2S, which is why I ended up buying the Arkon mount.
On the Garmin website for the Zumo XT you can view an "interactive" version of the Owners Manual, which allows you to step through the installation process, and has a picture of the U bolt mount.

The clamp on the ball and the square plate came with the Garmin, except I added a Lamonster Garage Garmin Zumo XT & XT2 Security Lock

I just bought a 22 RTL and am trying to figure a way to put GPS onto the bike. I found out that the USB cable that is in the glove box doesn't supply power to a device. According to manual it is only for connecting to BRP Connect. I have seen several deals about people selling their gps (Zumo XT) with the power cord, but not sure if every power cord is different if not specified as for a Spyder. The other problem is I can try running a temporary power cord from battery to glove box. I know that there is a Battery tender USB attachment that you can buy, but not sure if I can somehow run it from glove box or in front of steering column to battery easily. Never had panels off on this bike, since just got home last Thursday.
Other problem is mounting. I have check SlingMods and others, that sell a bracket that bolts to the top two bolts of the handlebar, but they look so bulky and ugly. And i am trying to figure all this out, before a 4 day trip next week.
I would appreciate any suggestions, relating to this year, as to wiring, mounting, etc, and maybe some pictures of gps mounted on your bike, along with where you go the mount, and maybe rough price of mount, or wiring harness.

Lamonster RAM handlebar clamp mount with Zumo XT2 mounted between my Helibars. Perfect fit, with Zumo powered by right side accessory connection.

Mine is mounted the way that Troop described. I actually followed his lead on this and I'm very pleased with the results.

I just picked me up a 22 RTL last week, and I am used to having a gps, but none on this bike. I found out that on the RTL 22, the usb cable in the glove box does not and will not charge anything, it's only for hooking up to Garmin Connect.

On my 23 RTL I purchased a 10' usb cable with the Mini connection for my GPS (Nuvi 1450) and ran it from the trunk up to the glove box. I also have a "mini to USB C" cord that I can plug into that 10' cord and use my phone (Galaxy FE20) if I want. I have a 1" ball mounted on my handelbars and use a Ram mount system that will hold either my phone or the GPS... but NOT both at the same time.
The USB in the trunk will charge your GPS or whatever you wish to use, and is powered on with the key, so there's no battery drain when the ignition is off.

On my 2022 RTL I installed a Zumo 590LM between the handlebars on a mount I purchased from LaMonster. I also purchased the plug n play harness. My 2022 did not have the right-side accessory plug so I could not use Lamonster's harness. I tapped into the power line running along the right side. It was an easy install, even with the need to splice into power.

They must have made a change to the USB connections with the newer Spyders.

I have a Garmin Zumo XT mounted on the handlebars of my 2024 Spyder RT Sea-to-Sky. The Zumo came with a short USB cable that has a standard USB connector on one end, and the standard odd shaped Garmin connector on the other. It's the cable you use to connect the Zumo to your computer in order to download updates to the Zumo.

I have that cable plugged into the USB connection in the "glove box" in front of the handlebars, and when connected to the Zumo it does provide power when the key is turned on.

I took some pictures.

Here's a picture of the Zumo with the cable end draped across the top of it, so you can see it's unplugged and can see the green battery icon in the upper right of the Zumo screen that it's not charging.

And here's a picture after I plugged the cable back into the port on the back of the Zumo. Notice the lightning bolt in the green battery icon in the upper right corner? That means it's charging.

Yeah, NO! At least, not necessarily! ;)

AFAICTell, that 'Lightning bolt' appearing on the Zumo ONLY means that the Zumo has recognised that it's now plugged into something that's connected it to another device &/or a potential power source, and not that it's actually charging! :lecturef_smilie:

You might want to check and make sure that yours is actually putting charge into the Zumo when it's plugged in like that, as I've seen a number of '24's where the owners have 'assumed' their Zumo's are charging cos they can see the lightning bolt, only to be seriously disappointed when their Zumo's eventually shut down with absolutely flat batteries, cos they weren't being charged AT ALL, or at least not properly/at the expected rate; they were just 'connected'.... :banghead:

However, there are a few other owners here in Oz who swear their Zumo's DO get charged by that plug, or at least, they haven't yet been caught out... YET! :gaah:

Maybe it's the luck of the draw... Or maybe not?? :dontknow:

If there is no battery icon present, or if the battery icon contains a lightning bolt symbol, that means the device is currently receiving a charge. The background color of the battery is unrelated to the amount to which the battery has been charged. Examples of charging icons are pictured below:

I have an errand to run tomorrow, and the destination is about 90 minutes away, so round trip time with the screen brightness turned down should be well within the battery life.
So even if it isn't charging it won't leave me stranded without directions.

Have you actually checked that your Zumo truly IS charging, and that the lightning bolt display isn't just lulling you into a sense of complacency?? :dontknow:

After all, many of us here on this Forum do know of at least one manufacturer's Owner's Manual &/or their Support Site that quite often doesn't get that sorta thing right!! :rolleyes: :mad:

And after being on the road for most of today, when I got home (not that long ago) and checked my messages, I found that in the last 12 or so hours I've received more than one message per hour from new &/or recently new Ozzie Spyder Owners (where far fewer Spyder Owners than over your way rely on their phones for navigation, cos too many here in our wide open spaces have been caught out without navigation when they really needed it, so a significant number of new Spyder owners install a GPS ASAP after buying their Spyders - and it seems that when it comes to those Spyders, most owners choose Garmin's, usually Zumo's ;) ) telling me that the glovebox USB on their brand new Spyder can mean that lightning bolt displays on their Zumo's, but there's not actually any charging happening... :rolleyes: And there's even more who've sent msg's/comments confirming that even tho they don't own a 2024 Spyder, their BRP supplied Zumo on an earlier can also show that it's charging while the Zumo is in its cradle &/or it's connected properly to the port; but despite the charge indicator showing, their GPS DOESN'T always CHARGE properly!! :lecturef_smilie:

Your errand run tomorrow might be a good start at checking this out for you/your set-up, but like I suggested earlier, you might want to actively CHECK that your Zumo REALLY IS actually charging when it's plugged in - cos while some owners are convinced that the Glovebox USB WILL charge things, including their Zumo &/or other GPS's or 'phones, there's a number of reports already posted here and the growing number of messages that I've received about this just today that suggest otherwise... at least for some. :dontknow:

Even just having a quick look back thru earlier threads here on the Forum suggests that it's apparently a bit hit & miss as far as that USB actually doing anything in the way of 'charging', even when it's clearly connected and transferring data! :banghead:

Plan for my charging test:

1) Unplug the cable from the Garmin and take a picture showing the battery icon.
2) Drive for an hour or so away from home.
3) Take another picture of the Garmin, again showing the battery icon.
4) Plug the cable back in to the Garmin and drive home

Once I get home I'll take the final picture, for which I'll unplug the cable from the Garmin and take a picture showing the battery state at that time.

But first, of course, I had to figure out how to get a date/time stamp on my pictures, since that's not a default option on my iPhone.
And I discovered the rechargeable batteries in my digital camera were dead, so they're in the charger now.
But I finally figured it out...

Okay, I'm home.
And no, I didn't get all the pictures I wanted. :(

I drove to the CAN-AM dealer where I bought my Spyder.
It's about 70 miles, and 1 hour and 2 minutes from where I live.

1. I disconnected the GPS from the power cable I had connected to the USB connection in the glove box.
2. I drove the 70 miles to the dealer.

The GPS powered itself off a couple of miles before I got to the dealer, well short of the time I expected it to operate on battery power.
I suspect that connecting both my phone and helmet headset via bluetooth to the GPS unit caused a bigger power draw than just using it to display navigation information.

I spent about an hour at the dealer, first waiting for the salesman since he was with a customer when I got there, and then waiting while he was in his managers office talking about the offer letter.

I think I was the last customer to leave the building, as they officially closed while I was there. When the salesman walked me out to my Spyder he held the door open for several of his co-workers who were leaving.
He then walked around my Spyder and asked me questions about what I liked and didn't like, and asked if I'd turn it on for him.
He was really impressed by the large dash display, and told me that while he'd read all the sales information, he'd never actually seen the Spyder's larger display when it was turned on.

I reconnected the GPS to the cable in the glove box while the salesman was looking at my Spyder and asking questions, and when I turned on the Spyder's Key, the display lit up, but it did not turn on.
The displayed xhowed the word "Garmin" and directly below it was a red battery icon. This was not the battery icon that normally displays in the upper right, it was in the center of the screen.

About 1/2 way home there was some crackling in the earphones of helmet's headset, and when I looked down I saw the typical Garmin display when you power it on while it has a USB connected to it. The question it asks is whether you want to enter file transfer mode (to transfer updates from your computer), and displays a Cancel and a Continue button. I fat fingered it while trying to drive, and hit the wrong button. So I had to find some place to pull over so I could turn the GPS off and back on, and correctly answer the question and allow it to function as a GPS.

I had found a very wide shoulder on an off ramp, and had pulled over and turned on the hazard flashers.


And then I got the first surprise of the day.
A guy pulled up in a car next to me, rolled down his passenger window, and asked me if I was okay and if I needed help.
I thanked him, and told him no, that I was fine.
He said "I'm glad to hear that." and drove off.

The GPS was working fine from that point on, although it didn't automatically pair with my headset when it restarted, so I wasn't able to hear the directions, although I could see the route on the display.

And then the Low Fuel light came on on the dash.
The next exit was one of the places I can get off to get home, although it's not the one I normally use.
I know there are a couple of gas stations there, so I got off, and pulled into station and started filling up.

And then I got my second surprise of the day.
There was a guy filling up his truck at the next pump over, and he saw me and asked "Is that a can-am?"
When I said yes, he got a big smile on his face and walked over to check it out.
And then he told me that he used to have one, but he sold it "more than 10 years ago."
He then smiled at me, looked at my Spyder again, and as he walked back to his truck mumbled something about needing another one.

When I pulled into the garage and shut down the Spyder, the GPS also turned off. So I unplugged the power cable from the back of the GPS, pressed the power button to turn it back on, and took this picture:

So that's how much charge it received from the USB cable in the glove box on the ride home.

Love the GPS setup and love the ability to lock the GPS in place. Question is, looking at it, couldn’t you just loosen the clamp on the ball and undo or cut the cord and go? Figure out later how to get the lock off or just leave it on.

Thanks, I'm quite happy with it.

The answers to all your questions are "yes".

And using a small flat screwdriver and a pair of needle nose pliers I can imagine it would be fairly easy to get the GPS out of the mount.
Which is why I pull the GPS out of the mount if I'm parked for awhile and lock it in the top case.
 
Here's my set up. Zumo XT wired into a fuse panel. Also feeds 2 heated vest and my battery tender connector. I have since upgraded the Zumo mount to the Tourtech locking mount. Not cheap but great piece of mind. I still bring it in at night if on the road. The phone uses the USB connector in the glove box
