• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Any Ideas. Spyder will NOT start

Facts::yikes:
2010 RTSE5...45 days owned/3000 miles..under warranty
Has run fine..last time I drove was on Thurs...noticed a couple times that it would slightly hesitate when shifting from 2d to 3rd.
Went to ryde tonight and will not start AT ALL...no turn over.
Battery seem strong as lights are strong/ipod works
Everything looks normal...push mod button...go to start and absolutely nothing (engine stop switch in ON position)
get a quick screen in orange that says ABS...that quickly goes blank.
In 1st gear...cannot get to N or anything else (of course engine not on).
Also cannot set parking brake....

I am totally not mechanical and my dealer is 160 miles 1 way and I have no way to transport.

I will call dealer a.m. when they open and talk to service manager..but figure you experts may have some/any suggestions to try.

Thanks so much.

First, open the frunk and check to see that all fuses and relays are firmly in place. Second, no matter whether or not the lights work, the battery could be too weak. On a new vehicle this is usually loose terminals, but they could be corroded or it could be a bad battery. If you have access to a voltmeter (cheap multimeters are readily available), check voltage at the jumper terminals under the seat. If you don't have at least 12.7 volts, you will have to remove the body panels to check the battery connections and check voltage at the battery. I'd recommend putting on a good motorcycle charger like the Battery Tender, charging the Spyder, and trying again if you do not have 12.7 volts at the battery. Tighten the terminals first. Beyond that you could have bad electronics (cluster?) or a bad wiring connection. Afraid that would require the dealers assistance. Good luck!

Do you have to put your foot on the brake when you crank it as you do on the SE5 ?:dontknow:
That's my guess too. You can get a wrench on the shifter to shift it in neutral by hand but make sure you have your foot on the brake when you crank it, it should then go into neutral.

Never owned (or even rode) one of those SE5 critters. When you leave it in gear does the display go blank like that?

Sheepishly asking!!!!! Did you hit the red power button next to the throttle? I freaked out the other day.... My wife walked over and said "I always turn the bike off with this".... Um.... Embarrassed FOR LIFE!!:roflblack::ohyea:

And yes... Brake is required to start... System always says it is in gear but once started it changes to neutral...

Thanks for suggestions...yep I mad sure power button was on....and yes always had foot on brake. Just purchased a voltmeter and Battery Tender...so as soon as my coffee connects with my brain I am headed out with book in hand ... when I say like NO MECHANICAL knowledge that is an understatement...BUT old "dogs" can learn new tricks...I'm just a little more than old, but here we go...will give you a report....

Dead Spyder Update

Hi there:
Barely registered 8 on the voltmeter...have had on Battery Tender for hour and just barely 10....but that suggests to me that it is a dead battery...will check in a couple hours and see if any improvement. Thanks everyone for suggestions...will keep you posted. 70 yr. old great grannie learned new skills today...how to use a voltmeter and attach the battery tender!!!!:2thumbs:

:2thumbs: Good for you, young lady! You're doing great! Bet that Spyder will start after the battery is charged.

New ? Same Issue

Approximately how long to move that voltmeter? I started at just below 8 at 10:30 a.m. Now I am a little beyond 11 on meter...guess who wanted to go Spyder riding today???? Never said patience was my middle name!!!!:D

Depends on the size of the battery and the capacity of the charger. Hopefully it will be back up around 13.5 in the morning. Your next lesson will be to disconnect it afor a few hours (or overnight) and see if it hold a charge. (you can go for a ride first, if you want.) It should remain above 12.4-12.5 volts after sitting several hours to overnight. If not, it will need a load test done on the battery.

All this can still be caused by loose or dirty battery terminals. A battery with loose terminals will not charge properly, and even if charged will not deliver full voltage to the electrical system (and test points). My dealer is notorious for leaving the terminals loose. I had to tighten them after delivery, and after every service and all warranty work. Yours may be making the same mistake.

If you get it charged and it runs right, you may want to make your next trip to the dealer. A new battery should not be down to eight volts in this weather, even after sitting a month. Not unless you have added an accessory that was left turned on, that is.

+1 on what Lamont said. We are very proud of you!

Old dogs??

Murphy, I'm older than you. My problem is that I am forgetting all the tricks. I can't alway remember them. I was told by the local Spyder people here that the use of a battery tender is not recommended because they transmit voltage "peeks" that harm the Spyder's computer. They have all kinds of excuses. [Thanks for the whole name---as it should be.
