• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Antenna removal

Does anyone know if the antenna, can be easily removed from the ST-L

Question- why do you want to?

I have removed it twice when I was working on the panel.
I did not try this, but if you remove the rear fender mud gard(above the wheel) you may be able to get at the nut that holds the antenna on.
If not you still need to remove that part as well as the saddle bag bracket and right rear panel

we removed my antenna permanently....just laid the wire under the seat all the way around....covered the whole with a Lamonster Spider sticker....we installed a J&M cb and 2 antennas looked ugly.....

Was finally able to remove antenna using a needle nose plyers and controlled muscle as not to break it, just about every thread had a ton of loctite on them. The storage cover I purchased for $70 from ULTRAGUARD 4-455BC was suppose to be for the GS/RS/ST , I'm guessing they didn't take into consideration the ST-Limited, has a radio. Replaced the removed antenna with a shorty antenna that I got at Wal-mart for $8.00 which works well with the cover. The radio reception is excellent, better then before, could have something to do with no more loctite.

STOCK ANTENNA IS WAY TOO LONG, CAN'T THIS STOCK ANTENNA BE CUT WITH BOLT CUTTER MAKING IT ABOUT 5 INCHES. SHOULD STILL WORK SAME WITH SAME RECEPTION AS STOCK AND LOOK BETTER AND MAKE IT MUCH EASIER FOR A PASSENGER TO GET ON. THE STOCK ONE I ESTIMATE IS 4 FOOT FOR LONGER. MY WIFE HAS A HARD TIME GETTING ON WITH-OUT HITTING THIS SUPER LONG ANTENNA.

how did you mount your cb antenna, I am planning on installing J@M cb also

I'm not a radio-guy; but aren't these antennas tuned to work with specific ranges of frequencies by adjusting their lenghts? :dontknow:

Terrible customer engineering

In order to mount the BRP top box on an ST-LTD, you have to remount the antenna. In order to do that you've got to remove both saddle bags, saddle bag mounts and about 9 torx screws. Then, if you can locate it (I couldn't) you have to find one more torx screw to remove the tail light assembly so you can get at the internal mounting of the OEM antenna. Lots of luck. I gave up and went to Walmart and bought the $9 rubber antenna and replaced the OEM one. Much easier than fooling around trying to remount the antenna so it connects to the top box (you got drill two holes in the body and the top box body). Reception? When I put my ear plugs in and and my helmet on, I can't hear the radio anyway.
By not finding the last torx screw, I'm going to end up paying some mechanic a fortune just to change the tail light bulb. Terrible engineering for the customer.

My Thoughts on the ST Limited Antenna

Just a few thoughts from a ST Limited owner:
  1. I think the antenna looks cool. I don't want to cut it off or replace it with a shorty $8 Walmart replacement.
  2. I actually listen to my radio when I ride. Not all the time, of course, but sometimes it's nice to have a song to sing to.
  3. When I put a cover on my ST, I twist the antenna so it sits on top of the rear fender. That seems to work just fine.

Don't Cut Your Antenna

Antenna are made to a certain length for a reason. It's not just a piece of wire. It is made to a certain length to receive a a specific range of frequencies. Be very careful about cutting it off: a short piece of antenna would be dangerous to someone getting on the bike. It also has a specific load that matches the impedance of the radio. Here are a couple alternatives:

  1. Replace the long antenna with the aforementioned $8 Walmart antenna. While shorter, this is a true replacement that is manufactured to a specific length and load.
  2. Fold the stock antenna down before getting on the Spyder. It is easy to reach back and twist the antenna back up to its riding position after you (or your wife) gets on the bike.

All the best,
John

Can anyone tell me the technical specifics of the Walmart short antenna? Does anyone know the specifics of the original antenna?

The problem with cutting the stock antenna shorter is the design. By cutting it you are changing the wavelength of that antenna reducing the range and effectiveness of it. I know there are some ham radio guys that can give a better description than what I said.
