• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Well, after 651 trouble free miles, I took the Spyder to a "local" (37 miles away) dealer for the 600 miler & the :yikes: "recall service".

Today - three days later - I go down to pick it up - EVERYONE says it's the nicest looking Spyder they've seen :ohyea:, and, after becoming $300+ lighter, I start her up & head for home.

Well, 35 of the 37 miles are freeway, so I pop on the Northbound wind her up to 75, and it's perfect for 2 miles. Then - warning...warning....warning - DPS FAILURE!!! Cough, suptter, sputter, limp mode.

For those of you lucky enough to have never seen this, it's BRP deciding that one of it's computer is TU, and therefore 35 mph is as fast as you can go. Ever tried this on a freeway - where the 18 wheelers are doing 70 in the slow lane??

I managed to get it off the freeway and into a gas station, where I promptly called the dealer.. :gaah: - and found that - after 15 minutes - the system had cycled, and I headed back South to the dealer. Well, this lasted until I hit the freeway, then back to 35 MAX again.

I limped her back to the dealer, where they re-re-programed the Spyder.

Both the tech & I took her out for a several mile run, then re-checked the re-re-map & everything still looked good. Off I went again, and managed to get home without another bout of limpy...

I'll let you know how it runs over the next couple of days.

My reason for this post is to suggest that you really think hard before you let the dealer mess with a well running Spyder. Perhaps the NEXT fix will be better...

3 days for the 600 mile service and update? OUCH!
$300+? OUCH!
Limp Mode for 4 miles on the Freeway? OUCH! OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!
Being back on the road, running well and Farkle apreciation - priceless.

I hope it continues.

Have you plugged the evap canister yet?

Tom

Was your dealer aware of all the problems that some ryders have been having after the update?

Glad you got it back there and he was able to fix it - hopefully it will stay fixed!

I trust our dealer, I do not trust what BRP is gonna do next though. I know the dealers get paid for fixing this mess but I'm sure their feeling alot of the brunt from it. Next time I hope BRP tells our dealers what they are putting in the secret updates!

My dealer (pioneersports) was good enough to take in on a long test drive cause he said 4 out of ten don't take the first time...sure enough it went into limp mode on him and he hooked it up and it showed it didn't take so he did it again and was fine. Sure glad my dealer was good enough to take
it on a long trail run...save me the hassle of limp mode:thumbup:

I had exactly the same thing happen after my update (08SM with 8300 miles). I limped back, the tech readjusted the position of a sensor for the steering, and it has been great since then (550 miles later.) I did, however, have the problem that others had, the leaning out at high temps. I will take it back when BRP has their next update, but with the cooler temps here it hasn't happened again. My Spyder does handle better now, and it also runs smoother so I am am overall pleased with the update.

That's exactly what happened to me after my update. They had to reprogram from scratch. Now it just sputters and farts. The mileage has gotten crappy after awhile. You think the plug is in order?

I'm waiting for the service pack 2 update that will be more "mod specific".

Sorry to hear about the trouble you had. $300.00 for what, service, update, and groundwire?

I just had my 600 mile service done on friday, along with the update, groundwires, and had them put on several mods for me. Did not pay no where near to what you payed.

My spyder is running even smoother now then before, at least so far. Had a bit of hesitation between 3500 & 4000 rpm before the service, that seems to be gone. But I didn't ryde it more then 60 mph. I will take it out onto the freeway today and see what it does. (I still have stock exhaust, no juice box, and no mods to the engine)!

I hope they get your spyder running again with no more problems!

and yet another update story

had the recall/update done and here are the results. spyder went in with full fuel, one km put on by dealership, after 3 short rides 125km total, fuel guage is at 3 bars ( fuel mileage sucks now ), steering noticeability different ( good ) not a problem before tho, exhaust sound different, deeper and throatier, seems to lack the aggressiveness from before upon acceleration, fuel smell is just awfull. should have left things well enough alone. am going to the mountains next weekend for a good long ride , hopefully things will change for the better. :yikes:

All I have to say to the original post is that.... if it ain't broke, don't fix it. That's why I decided to fore-go the update. Sorry for your troubles. :(

over 300 miles since update and both spyders are fine ... running better than before ....:D

Same here.

I also agree with Doc. It could be the dealer's fault not following the instructions carefully. For once, the instructions are clear (at least that part)!!!

I did the cannisterectomy before the update -no noticable change (cannisterectomy=no fumes anymore) after the update.

Still running on day two  -

No noticable difference in the steering, idle is rough, and it backfires more.

I'm going to reset the system later today & see if that helps...

The more I hear about the various results of this update (which seem to have no bearing on mods or lack thereof) it makes me wonder if it is more a matter of the INSTALLER than the INSTALLATION.

I know I'm not the only one that has voiced this idea.

My brother is a mechanic and owns a auto repair shop in KC, MO. I have worked around these and other mechanics and I have been surprised at how many times they will tackle a new vehicle/issue in whatever way they have always done it.

Many times they don't even consult the book until things go wrong.

Don't get me wrong. They are a good bunch of mechanics and they generally do a great job and the shop has a good reputation.

Data updates usually have a specific sequence. Getting out of sequence may not appear to be a big deal to some. But it can be a very big deal.

It can be much more than just plugging into the BUDS and pushing a button.

It may seem obvious to you and me that they need to go exactly step by step per instruction from BRP on this. But have you ever tried to tell a mechanic anything?

GOOD LUCK!

Now I've joined the poor milage ranks.

OK, it ran fairly well for an entire tank, but the milage has gone from 33.9 (1st 650 miles) to 27.1 - I think that shoots the "leaning therory" down..

I also suspect, they intended to leave the cannister vent open longer, which would lean it out. Since I've done the cannisterectomy, it's now running rich.

While I REALLY don't want to add a JB - I may have to.

Any post-update comments on the JB??

Thanks

A Juice Box won't lean out you're fuel, it can only add fuel. A free flowing filter might help.
