Another Oil Thread (sorry!) - Has anyone tried using Mobil 1 10W40?

I cringe, but I need to. Anyone on the forum used the Mobil 1 10/40? Living in hot Florida, I'm thinking 10/40 is a bit better. Anyone that wants to post pop corn, be my guest, not offended.

I have been using Mobil 1 10w40 in all my bikes for years. Goldwing's, Harley and my last three Spyders. About 500,000 miles total riding and never a problem. I change every 5,000 miles on all my Velciches.

Manual states 5w40 motorcycle oil. The motorcycle oil part may be significant depending on the clutch system. I know regular car oils would wreak havoc on wet clutches and cause slippage in motorcycles ATVs, etc. Just an FYI.

It's a great oil. I assume that this is what you are referring too. It meets all of the specs.

Look for the JASO MA2 Bill. That will make sure it will work for your clutch.

Apart from the fact that it doesn't say anywhere that it meets any of the JASO or MA/MA2 requirements, so it's unlikely to work well for long with a wet clutch, like those in our Spyders... from what I can see, that oil is intended for engines that've got a bit of wear on them...

And knowing that the 1330 ACE motors are a 'close tolerance' motor that rarely uses ANY oil between scheduled changes, I really doubt that it would help your motor much at all!! nojoke

I reckon that running a 'high-milage' oil in a 'close tolerance' engine that HASN'T done high milage and worn to the extent that it IS using a fair amount of oil between scheduled changes would be sorta like trying force a Swimmer to swim Olympic World Record times thru sloppy wet cement instead of water!! Not Good! :yikes:

So, not something I'd ever suggest anyone does, nor would I do that to my Spyder. :spyder: But it is your Spyder; and it's your Spyder's clutch too! :dontknow:

I used the Mobil 1 4T 10W40 Racing for one oil change that when analyzed sheared down badly at less than 6K miles so switched to Amsoil Metric full synth and it goes 9,300+ and is always well in 30 range. The Spyder transmission sharing the engine oil beats the devil out of the oil.

I have used Mobil 1 10W40 Motorcycle oil. It has the JASO MAS rating. But like others have posted it was breaking down at 6,000 miles. I even had a local oil lab analyst check. I am now using Amsoil Full Synthetic oil. I use the 10W40.

I have been using Rotella T6 Full Synthetic in my 2017 RT-L for several years. No issues whatsoever. Meets all specifications required by Cam-Am.

I run full-synthetic MOBIL 1 made for motorcycles on my Harley.

For my Spyder, I run the semi-synthetic Castrol Actevo made for motorcycles.

I believe that oils SPECIFICALLY made for motorcycles are slightly better than oils made for cars, but YMMV.

As long as you don't use Crisco, you're good !!

I'm using Shell Rotella T-6 15w-40, I'm hoping it will hold up better than the 5w that most use.

I run mine harder than most people and push the limits with it when I am by myself, so I am hoping it will hold up better.

I plan on getting my oil tested on the next change and see if it is.

Thanks for the comment CloverHill, let us know how the Rotella T6, 15/40 goes. I have given that some that thought. Rotella T6 checks all the boxes, hope it's not too viscous for free flow.

Bill, BajaRon sells the Amsoil and gives a great price on it. I know others are using the Rotella. I use it in my Spyder, but I am also changing it out at 4500 miles. From what I have read, I don't think it will hold up for the 9300-mile intervals recommended for the 1330 engine. Remember, mine is the 998.

Thanks Paul I'm thinking along those lines. I have a friend who has some Amsoil which he used in his Spyder. Sold the Spyder, bought a BMW GS, so he says I can have the Amsoil. I just need to get there and pick it up. Cheers!

For the oil, we recommend XPS 4T 5W40 synthetic oil. If XPS is not available, you can use SAE 5W40 synthetic 4-stroke motor oil, meeting or exceeding the following lubricant industry specifications: API Service Classification: SJ, SL, SM or SN. Always check the API Service Label certification on the oil container. It should contain at least one of the standards listed.
