I just bought a 2012 RTS SE5, and I'm getting used to her. Love her so far. I discovered this site, and I'm glad I did. Read the Dos and Don'ts and found out I was shifting WAY too early based on cars and my rather limited 2-wheel experience. I'm trying to get used to the high RPMs, but it'll take some time. I've been practicing in my gated community, with lots of curves and hills but a 25 mph speed limit. The first time, I was shifting into 3rd at 25, and it seemed happy, but shifted back as soon as I hit a hill. Anyway, after learning better, I tried it staying in 1st, and although I felt a bit stressed, the Spyder seemed OK. I tried 2nd at 25, but the RPMs were well below 5000, so I switched back to 1st. Is that right, or did I misunderstand the principle? It seems so strange to be driving around in 1st gear! Today I'm hoping to go out the gate onto a real road where I'll go around 55 or 60 (scary, that) and I intend to stay in 4th gear, using the shift points in the Dos and Don'ts. I hope I can gut it out, because it'll probably feel uncomfortable.
Now for the dumb questions. I have the adjustable windshield, and I read the post about not keeping it in the absolute lowest position, so I moved it up a notch. I'd played with it before several times, and it worked fine. When I got home, I decided to try bottoming it and raising it a bit less, but when I hit the switch, nothing happened. Now when I turn the key to ON and try the switch, still nothing. I haven't tried it with the engine running yet, but I don't think that's necessary for it to work. D'uh. I knew I should have tried it with the engine running before making a fool of myself. It DOES indeed need the engine to be running to work. No problems with it now.
I thought it might be a fuse, but the manual doesn't list it for any of the fuses. I didn't want to start actually pulling fuses (I'm a total zero about car/bike mechanics), but I found the strip under the seat and pushed them all in a couple of times. The switch still doesn't do anything. Then I opened the frunk, unzipped the liner, and found the fuse box, but I can't open it for the life of me. OK, I'm a 68-year-old woman, but I'm definitely not weak and I have very large hands, so it shouldn't be a problem. I didn't want to force anything, so I looked here and found a post that said to squeeze top and bottom at the same time, tried that, no luck. It won't budge. I can't squeeze any harder, and I don't feel any give in the cover.
Any suggestions (I know, find a strong man
)? What fuse controls the windshield, anyway? And (my fear) what else is on that fuse?? I still need help getting the frunk fuse box open, though.
Thanks for your help! I'm really looking forward to riding my girl (Bellatrix), and I don't want to break her! Reading some of the posts here about people's problems has scared me a bit!:yikes:
