• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

ANOTHER noob plus some dumb questions

I just bought a 2012 RTS SE5, and I'm getting used to her. Love her so far. I discovered this site, and I'm glad I did. Read the Dos and Don'ts and found out I was shifting WAY too early based on cars and my rather limited 2-wheel experience. I'm trying to get used to the high RPMs, but it'll take some time. I've been practicing in my gated community, with lots of curves and hills but a 25 mph speed limit. The first time, I was shifting into 3rd at 25, and it seemed happy, but shifted back as soon as I hit a hill. Anyway, after learning better, I tried it staying in 1st, and although I felt a bit stressed, the Spyder seemed OK. I tried 2nd at 25, but the RPMs were well below 5000, so I switched back to 1st. Is that right, or did I misunderstand the principle? It seems so strange to be driving around in 1st gear! Today I'm hoping to go out the gate onto a real road where I'll go around 55 or 60 (scary, that) and I intend to stay in 4th gear, using the shift points in the Dos and Don'ts. I hope I can gut it out, because it'll probably feel uncomfortable.

Now for the dumb questions. I have the adjustable windshield, and I read the post about not keeping it in the absolute lowest position, so I moved it up a notch. I'd played with it before several times, and it worked fine. When I got home, I decided to try bottoming it and raising it a bit less, but when I hit the switch, nothing happened. Now when I turn the key to ON and try the switch, still nothing. I haven't tried it with the engine running yet, but I don't think that's necessary for it to work. D'uh. I knew I should have tried it with the engine running before making a fool of myself. It DOES indeed need the engine to be running to work. No problems with it now.

I thought it might be a fuse, but the manual doesn't list it for any of the fuses. I didn't want to start actually pulling fuses (I'm a total zero about car/bike mechanics), but I found the strip under the seat and pushed them all in a couple of times. The switch still doesn't do anything. Then I opened the frunk, unzipped the liner, and found the fuse box, but I can't open it for the life of me. OK, I'm a 68-year-old woman, but I'm definitely not weak and I have very large hands, so it shouldn't be a problem. I didn't want to force anything, so I looked here and found a post that said to squeeze top and bottom at the same time, tried that, no luck. It won't budge. I can't squeeze any harder, and I don't feel any give in the cover.

Any suggestions (I know, find a strong man )? What fuse controls the windshield, anyway? And (my fear) what else is on that fuse?? I still need help getting the frunk fuse box open, though.

Thanks for your help! I'm really looking forward to riding my girl (Bellatrix), and I don't want to break her! Reading some of the posts here about people's problems has scared me a bit!:yikes:

:welcome: and :congrats: on your new :spyder2:. The shifting takes some learning. When we were in Hawaii, we drove the famous Hana Highway. Over 50 miles of sub 25 miles per hour. We used first gear for the whole 100 miles plus. We don't use 5th gear until we exceed 60 mph on the highway. Keep it happy in the 5000 - 5500 range and you will always be right.

Windshield: I believe the engine has to be running for it to work.

Congrats on your :spyder2:! I love my RT, too!

:nopic: :spyder:

Have fun!

When we rented trikes, I barely left the neighborhood. With my Spyder, I was out the first day riding wherever I wanted. Not worrying about falling over and the coordination of using the clutch helped me love riding!

Here are a couple of photos. I'm going to put flags on the trunk, but I have to wait for my Bike Barn to arrive because the cover won't fit over the flag poles and it keeps raining here. The floorboards were on it already; I'm pretty sure they're Seal boards, and I love them. They make it easier to keep my foot off the brake, too.:opps:

Congratulations on your new ride, that is a great model year and a great ride. I too have a hard time opening the fuse box cover, gave up on it a few times but it does open like they say but can be difficult. Keep reading on SPYDER LOVERS forum and you will get a lot of good information.
Lots of luck and enjoy
