They actually hold spray epoxy quite well. I would recommend installing them and stand back a few days as you may not want them coated.

Absolutely, or without. They work well without but is nicer with the block off plate as it attaches directly to the plate. Then it's one screw to take both off.

I know the pictures just don't do them justice as everyone that has seen them in person are crazy about how they look. Very simple to install also!
