• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Another fire -

I already told my dealer today either he or me is removing that thing. I'm also going to have the headers removed and sent in to have them Jet Coated. Heck all the panels are going to be off anyway for paint so it's the perfect time. Working on that fire triangle, remove some heat and a possible source.

I do not think any dealer can legally remove it for you, and it is something you will have to take care of yourself. There should be a thread on here to tell you exactly what needs to be done. I wish you the best with all your future mods.

Let me know how the coating goes-- who did it and how much--- I'm interested in this too!

To the best of my knowledge, neither he nor leoejr has stated whether the vent tube extension had been done on their Spyders yet. That is a crucial piece of information many of us are waiting to hear about, as that is supposed to be BRP's fix to the fire issue. :dontknow:

Please answer ?

Please answer ?
Lets keep in mind the vent hose is just fix for a known source of fuel fumes in that area. There is still a possibility of it developing a fuel leak from the fuel line. Of course every gasoline powered vehicle on the road has that danger.

Donzo-It has been asked numerous times now and I'm sure you just missed it :dontknow: but its really important to know .... had the evap vent hose recall been done? And one area where Firefly and I agree is about filing with the NHTSA. IE: If you had the recall done and it still had a fire it may prompt more investigation , If the recall was NOT done and it burned , it may prompt a second mailing/recall to to ensure owners get the problem fixed.

I''m sorry for your loss. Hopefully Insurance is gonna make you whole.

Please note that there was never a recall for this issue, it was a warranty campaign. You had to complain to your dealer about a gas smell, or an engine performance issue after the first steering recall (software update), and then they would address it if your Spyder fell withing the list of affected machines. There can't be a second mailing/recall if there was never a first. If you do not have an extended emissions canister vent on your machine...contact your dealer to have it corrected. They will not contact you. Please also note that all the later machines produced have the extended vent installed on the production line...from mid-2009 onwards.

Well stated, Scotty.

Indeed, this was one of the very first items I looked for once I accepted delivery of my 2010 RS SM5 in January of 2010. Indeed the evap vent hose was extended on mine from the factory.

I do have a question - has there ever been ANY reports of a Spyder fire on machines WITH THE evap can vent hose ALREADY extended?
Thank you & Safe Ryde to all!

:agree: both of our Spyders had it done when they performed the update for the surging between 3500 and 4000 RPM issue.

So far we do not know of any, and that is why we continue to ask the question.

Vent hose relocated or not, what produced the ignition?

There have been reported problems with either the spark plug wires, or the boots, on some Spyders that members have reported on here. It may easily be a combination of things causing the fire, but the vent tube extension getting the fumes out from under the tupperware seems to be a good solution so far.

:agree:

But this is still only 1/2 of the problem. There must be an ignition source......

Plug wires? Purge Solenoid? Worn wiring shorting out?

I also had a spark plug wire [boot] arcing.
I imagine IF there were gas fumes around could of went ''BOOM''
But like my Grandfather used to say;
IF the dog didn't stop to take a pee he would have caught the cat.:D

Spyder thermal events.

Was @ my dealer yesterday hoping to get DPS done. He had a box full of parts for a Spyder that had a thermal event, that's how my company defines fires. He said it was more wiring under the glove box area, but did significant damage. BuRP is paying for the fix. The service manager also showed me a new fuel hose and where a suspected weak area in the radius will crack on the old hose. I plan on doing more digging, see what else I can find out. Still didn't get DPS done yet, their swamped with jet skis that need to go out :gaah: By the way, I'm a retired volunteer firefighter/emt. While in the USAF one of my jobs was aircraft/ground accident investigation.

Vent hose answer

All I can say is that the Spyder was in the shop at Elkgrove Power Sports from 1/5/10 thru 1/22/10. in that time they did $1038.97 in warranty work but some how missed the loose throttle body and air intake control value out of adjustment.

5/7/10 in was at the Lodi dealer that found the above problems. The invoice shows no vent hose or canister recall done. I did not know about that recall. I just got the July 17 DPS recall notice a week ago. I never got one about the vent hose recall but its history now anyway.

I just called my insurance company and told them to give me another offer on my Spyder. If and when I settle this with my insurance company I will go after BRP in every legal way I can.

I received this reply to a email I sent to Mr. Leduce on 09/11/2010 from Yves Leduc on 09/12/2010
Thank you Mr. Johnson
I remember you very well. I will look into this personally and asked our Director Customer support to come back to me with a report. You will hear from us, promise.
Yves Leduc
this was 14 business days ago. I have since then requested he tell me what was happening but I get no answers. Yep BRP really cares. I will close this by also saying that yes I am very upset. Yes I do get very upset when people I have to deal with refuse to at least acknowledge my request for information. What is going on here is not rocket science. Your product it faulty, this fault causes damage to the product and can and could cause serious injury and even death to a owner. That is not something you push away from and try and hide from it. You deal with it as quickly as possible. You not only replace or repair the product, you go above and beyond to settle it so that the customer is completely happy with the result. Then said customer will support you and your company in future debates about the company product and services. BRP is doing just the opposite and it is going to cost them in the long run.

Sure sorry to hear you're not getting the responses you want... certainly adds to your stress and anger over this whole situation.

The 'second' update was considered an 'engine performance' update that was done after the 'first' steering software update. The 'second' update included another software update as well as the vent hose re-routing. This update helped with the 'sputtering' that many had after the first update.

Please keep us posted on how things are going.
