• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Another fire -

Don I'm really sorry for your loss, but glad to hear that you are ok. As for Silver Surfer, I also was at the Smokies and there is no way I saw 300 Spyders there, or 200 for that matter. I counted 97 at Lamont's, so there was probably around 150-175 or so max.

Now regarding these fires: those 4 or 5 mentioned, are the ones that we know about. Not everyone knows about SpyderLovers, and SpyderTalk, and I'm sure BRP is not going to come out and volunteer any negative information like this. I had my DPS recall done at Alcoa last week and love the way it steers now but it was a long time coming, way too long if you ask me. I did the Dragon 2 days before and it was very hard with the way my bike used to steer. What I'm trying to get at is that it will probably take many more fires and possibly a fatality or two before BRP is forced to act.

I'm not a fan of Carlo after having my Spyder down at the dealer's for 63 days and having him tell me that my only recourse was to force the dealer to fix my bike all the while having BRP deny them permission to replace what they thought was wrong!

There are problems with these machines and as much as I love mine, I'm very close to reaching the limit of my patience. This Friday I will go to a new dealer they told me about at the Rally to try to get the problem with my lights solved (they turn on-off, and dim while riding):gaah:. I feel there is a problem with the main harness which leads me to believe that I will be one of the next fire victims.

If enough people file reports with the NHTSA--- something WILL be done. It took around 10 of us with steering issues to see official action from the NHTSA. With only 4 fires reported--- we need to get a higher number. Many that had fires never reported them. Last year when we had the 'rash' of them happen I checked the NHTSA website every day and they never made reports.

We have the power and tools to get to the bottom of this-- we just need to USE them---

Complaint Information

Description:I had ridden the Can Am Spyder Roadster for approximately 30 minutes before stopping at Costco and filling it up. No overfill or gas spilled. I road approx. 2 miles home, parked, and went into the house for approx. 3 or 4 minutes. I returned to Spyder started it & backed up approx. 10 feet, pulled forward, backed up again, started forward out of my driveway. When I turned & started forward there was a smell electrical wire burning. I saw smoke coming from the front of my seat & central plastic panel. Before I could react to that I had moved forward maybe 10 or 15 feet. There was a whooshing sound & a large amount of smoke from the same area. It scared me enough that I panicked & tried stepping off the Spyder as it was moving. I tripped and struck the driveway on my left arm, shoulder and head. I rolled over & looked to see what happened. The Spyder had continued forward into the fence & tree at the side of my driveway. There was a lot of smoke and a small flame approx. a foot high at the front of the seat & center panel. When the Spyder hit the tree the flame jumped to around 3 to 4 feet. The Spyder had run over my garden hose and hit the water line so that I could not get to a hose or turn the water on. I was afraid the gas tank would explode any way so I called 911. By the time the fire department arrived the Spyder was approximately 75 % burnt. The fireman in charged stated he felt the fire started on the right side. My Can Am Spyder is the 8th one to burn up this way. On 09/28/2010 another 2008 Can Am Spyder self-ignited while the ride was moving. He reported that his machine was also a total loss. Just my opinion' [that and a token will get you a ride on the subway]
But could it be that BRP threw some of those fire victims a bone.
I know they did that to a few who were having other problems, that's why some deleted their anti BRP post's:dontknow:

Another story I didn't really want to hear. I am sorry for your loss of the Spyder. I had mine broken down a couple week ago to take care of oil changes and some spark plugs. While I was in there I realized my dealer never did the evap can vent reroute. I had never seen one that had been done but after reading about the last fire and then smelling gas on a ride shortly after that I decided I needed to do a reroute of my own. I bought about 5 feet of fuel line and ran it back over the swing arm to vent out the opening of the rear fender supports on the left side of the Spyder. Haven't smelled gas since.

WOW, this is the second fire within the last six weeks from the same area. I'm so scared the one of mine will be next. :yikes:

Glad to hear you are okay!!

Thanks for all the kind words. I am going to miss that machine...My insurance company is going to total it (thank God - the fix would have been a nightmare) So tomorrow I am going to take off the mods not damaged before they pick it up and take it to there wrecking lot.
It sounds like I will be getting "fair market value". I will give all info when this is sorted (about a week they said) but won't give out more info now til it is settled. I don't know what I am going to do concerning a new bike - I still have my Sabre 1100 to ride and may put this money a side and see what the future holds. I would love a 3 wheeler that leans in the turns. I know companies are working on this design, this would be the best of both worlds - 3 wheel safety and the comfort of the gravity displacing lean in the turns.
I slept little last night thinking of my loss and to add to the BS - someone stole my rear top case - I quickly took it off when the fire started and put it on the curb - some AH took it!:gaah:

Very sorry to hear about the fire, and your loss of the Spyder, but very glad to hear you are okay.

For those that don't know what the vent tube extension is supposed to look like, here you go. I took these in the dark, so they are not the greatest shots but they will show you what to look for.

Looking under the right side of the Spyder, behind the front tire and under the black plastic guard under the radiator you should see this (I placed a red circle around it for you):

Going in for a closer look you should see the tube very clearly like this:

I hope this helps everyone check to see whether the vent tube extension was completed on their Spyder or not.

Did Donzo ever reply to the vent tube extension question? Did his Spyder have it or not?

Sorry, but if he did, I've just missed seeing it...

Thanks,

To the best of my knowledge, neither he nor leoejr has stated whether the vent tube extension had been done on their Spyders yet. That is a crucial piece of information many of us are waiting to hear about, as that is supposed to be BRP's fix to the fire issue. :dontknow:

Sorry for your lose, this isn't the first one on fire and wire the extreme heat under the tank it won't be the last. I love it how people feel it's nessasary to chime in and say "well mine ran fine today blah blah blah" save it....

Sorry to hear about the fire but sure am glad you are ok. I know what you're going through as mine caught on fire as well a few months ago. It was fixable and now is back on the road again better than it ever was.

Hope the whole process goes smoothly for you and that you are back on the road again soon.

Wasn't this done with the second update...automatically, when you take it in for such?

Firefly is one of those who performed the cannisterectomy, so there was nothing for the dealer to do when he took his in. Perhaps he looked at it, shook his head, and asked some questions, but he can't extend a vent tube that no longer exists. :D
