Another Bucket List Ride (Arctic Circle)

Just read the thread about 'How long was your longest one-day distance ride?' My wife and I have had several over 800 when we were both working and only had one or two weeks of vacation and needed to get to point B from A. After we retired, we started to slow down and smell the flowers. In 2019 we rode Coast to Coast and back for 66 days, 26 states and 11,000 miles. She was pulling a Cargo trailer, and I was pulling an Aspen pop-up.

This Sunday I am leaving, riding Solo to the Artic Circle, as she is not interested in the mosquitos and Bears, and it's not her bucket list ride. I will take the Cassiar route North and may return the same way. I have put this ride off for the last 3 years due to surgeries or injuries, mine or hers, but this is the year because at 72 it's not getting any easier. We are also BunkaBiker Hosts and have hosted many riders over the last 3 years who have made the ride and have gleaned a lot of useful information from them. I've got the 2024 edition of Milepost with me to help pick my campgrounds and fuel. I will add to this post as I make my way North and back.

What a great bucket list adventure. If you can post pictures and notes about your adventure as you go along. If you can't be sure to write it up for us when you get back. Good luck on you trip. How long are you taking for this trip?

4 to 6 weeks depending on the weather .

We will look forward to news about your ride/adventure to the Arctic Circle. Even though I lived in Alaska for almost 20 years, we never ventured that far. You are joining a very elite club. The Spyder riders that have done it are few and far between. :firstplace:

If you have not done it yet, read about Yazz and her trip there about 10 years ago. It is in the archives.

We had the privilege of meeting up with her when she visited Eagle River and Wasilla.

Looking forward to reading about your trip. Good luck! At 85 I think I waited too long for that trip, I still do some trips on the spyder and limit them to 300 or 400 miles per day.

Made it to the Circle on my first ride to Alaska in 09. On the 2015 trip went to other places in the state that i missed on first trip.

I read about her trip when it was first posted and was one of my inspirations on doing the ride. My wife and I had signed up to go when Murphy Brown did her ride north, but my work got in the way.

Glad to hear you are aware of both Yazz and Murphy Brown. We had good times with both groups. I re-read all the items for both trips just a couple months ago. It brought back some fond memories for both of us.

Two days and 756 miles later I’m in Vanderhoot and heading up Hwy 16 then the Cassier towards the Alcan.

Now you've got me confused?? Is Vanderhoot in Prince George, or was the first post a mistake?? :dontknow:

And while I'm reasonably sure that you didn't do another 756 miles in the approx 4.5 hours between those posts above; but if by some miracle you did, I'd still really be interested to know how you get your campsites and the surrounds for each pic to be EXACTLY the same?!

Nice set-up & a good looking camp spot tho!

Love that you are doing this. I am keeping track of all you long haulers. I am planning on doing a cross country trip next year. I like to say that I am younger than I will ever be, and probably healthier than I will ever be, so if I want to do it, I am darn well going to try to do it now, because tomorrow is not promised.

Day 4 and I am camping at Dease Lake I’m at 1,245 miles from home and the scenery just keeps getting better, I saw my first Bear and cub and followed a cow moose down the road for about a 1/4 mile.

Made it to Whitehorse I’m about 1,700 miles from home, the camping has been great and have met many riders doing the same thing.

I left a sign (license plate) at Sign Post Forest but I couldn't tell you how to find it. Amazing journey, isn't it?

Made it to Alaska and now I’m in Fairbanks laying over for several days until the Dalton dries up a little. I’m only going to the Artic Circle sign 152 miles from Fairbanks.

Check your brake light switch once in awhile. I note you are picking up a lot of the "glacial till." The switch gets clogged and the brake lights stay on. It could also throw a code as if you were riding the brake.

Wow, what an incredible journey you and your wife have had! Your Coast-to-Coast adventure sounds like a dream, and it's inspiring to see you still pursuing your passion with your upcoming solo ride to the Arctic Circle. At 72, your determination is truly commendable. Safe travels and enjoy every moment of this epic ride - looking forward to reading your updates!
