Annoyed by people asking how much $$$$ ...

Lately I've been barraged by people asking how much my Spyder cost to buy......and some are downright annoying and rude.

I don't mind when someone seems to have a genuine interest in the Spyder-- or if they ask in a decent manner--- like "If you don't mind me asking.... yada yada yada..".
To these people I'll give them a base of around $17,000 and tell them they go up from there maxing out around $25,000.

But lately I've had people that you can just tell would never make enough in a lifetime to own a Spyder shout out "How much that cost?".

When they are far away I just ignore them like I can't hear through my helmet--- but when they are close and I must answer I'll usually say "around 20". To which they usually ask "THOUSAND?????". No -- like I meant 20 DOLLARS---- WTH ?

I was raised that it was rude to ask people how much something costs - and in this day and age of 'THE' GOOGLE.... I can find the price out on my own if I'm that interested......

Anyway --- how do you all handle this ??

I get that question quite often, no one has been rude about it tho. I also havent had anyone react to my answer like its ridiculous price. Most of them seem to think its more than a fair price. However that is something I worry about. I'm sorry you've had run ins with people like that.

The way I see it the price of a brand new Spyder is fine when compared to the price of other motorcylces. Maybe even a little low.

When asked, I ask them--what do you think it costs. If they are in the ball park--I usually fess up. It not, I give them the 17,000 to 28,000 range.

If they are really interested though, I am not adverse giving them the $28-30 range. (speaking of my RT'S.

My answer will vary with my mood of the day--but I always try to be cordial.

And you are right--it is rude to ask. To me, its similar to how much do you earn a year.

I say you can't buy what I have in and on my Spyder with money- lots of personal blood sweat and tears. I say you can get -started- for around $18K and leave it at that.

The Spyder seems to attract this kind of question more than most. :dontknow:
I've owned a few cars and a couple of bikes and never been approached as much about price before.

I have an RS-S and usually compare the numbers to HD glide pricing.

When asked how much did it cost, I tell them exactly what it cost, I'm not embarrassed as to what any of my toys cost.

Ha, it's funny how often I get that question. I'd say it's #2, right after "What is that?" but before "How fast does it go?" ("Fast enough to get you a ticket," I say :joke

Perhaps I'm being charitable, but I think most people ask the cost question innocently-- the Spyder is exotic, most people have never seen one before, and it *looks* expensive.

The only counter to my theory is that when I tell them how much it costs, nobody ever says, "Oh, only that much"?

Anyway, I've got my speech down pat:

"It's a Can-Am Spyder. It's made by the guys who make Sea-Doos, they got into the motorcycle business. It wasn't cheap, but it's a lot of fun. It goes fast enough to get you a ticket. No, it doesn't ride like a motorcycle, more like a snowmobile or ATV, it doesn't lean, you have to do the leaning. It's a lot safer than being on two wheels in this area, that's for sure. CAN-AM, look them up. Have a nice day!"

I'd be surprised if I've varied from that speech even once in the last three months. I carry some of the little brochures to hand out, but most people don't seem to be in the market for one after I finish my speech. Must be the sticker shock :joke:

Yes, I too have been asked on numerous occasions and often it's someone yelling at me across a parking lot. If you can't walk over and ask in a some what polite way I don't feel obligated to "shout" an answer back to someone I don't know. And yes, that's often the guy that you just know is never going to come up with that much coin, so it often comes across as nosy and intrusive. The guys that yell at me a pretty much ignore now. But I have had some nice conversations with people generally interested. Usually you can tell because they are the ones that ask 20 questions about the Spyder, not just "What's that cost?"

It's the kind of people that jimcbow mentioned that I find annoying/rude. To come up to a complete stranger and have the first words out of your mouth be "How much that cost" is just terrible manners.

I've literally had people ask me as we were crossing paths at an intersection!

I really don't mind it if it's further down on the questions list.....and they're polite about it.

Guess I'm expecting too much from the general society...

I don't mind people asking. I myself grew up poor so I would never say someone would never afford a spyder in a lifetime. That's not a humble thing to say. We can have our spyders and still be humble.
