There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

We launched Maps initially with the first version of iOS. In order to do this, we had to create a new version of Maps from theground up.
There are already more than100 million iOS devices using the new Apple Maps, with more and more joining usevery day. In just over a week, iOS users with the new Maps have alreadysearched for nearly half a billion locations. The more our customers use ourMaps the better it will get and we greatly appreciate all of the feedback wehave received from you.
While we’re improving Maps, you can try alternatives by downloading map appsfrom the App Store like Bing, MapQuest and Waze, or use Google or Nokia maps bygoing to their websites and creating an icon on your home screen to their webapp.

They didn't have to build one from the ground up because they wanted to make it better. They had to build a new one from the ground up because they wanted to cut google out of their device. Hence the also missing YouTube app.
Their greed is coming around to bite them in the ass. I love my Mac and iPad, but apple is becoming more and more draconian every year. Nice to see them take a kick in the nuts.
