Americade - Battery Question

Purchased my 2012 RTS-SE5 new in May of 2012 and it has the original battery (16,333 current mileage). My :ani29: is garage-kept, all maintenance completed, and is always on a battery tender between rides.

Before Americade rolls around, I'm wondering if a new battery might be a good purchase? I'm guessing 5 years is not really old for a battery, and mine has shown no signs of a problem, BUT... am looking for some input on how long your batteries have lasted.

No service maintenance required before Americade, but will be replacing my rear tire... so... possibly battery also?

Hard to say...you see a lot of posts as to battery life but there is so much that is tied to it. The model, weather, the operational time, the mods on the spyder, tended not tended etc. I have an RS 2012 SM5 with 37,000 miles ryde all year never tended have run the battery down to nothing in a couple of occasions and it is still running strong. I do not worry about it and will continue to go till it gives me reason to change it. Now that your worrying about it puts a hitch in things and for peace of mind and the estimates seen on the RT you should change it. If you have an SE model you have no back up on the SM models you can push start them and they will run with a low battery....:thumbup:

Display resets on starting.

I have seen this many times on diffrent Spyders. If the display resets as if you just turned the key on nojokewhile cranking, Next stop battery store! This indicated you did not have enough battery voltage during cranking to keep the computer active. The computer thinks you shut it off. Thus the reset screen. Hope this helps. I never run a glass mat battery more than 3 years.

Battery life

The first time you think your Spyder didn't spin the way it should, or as you are acustomed to, on startup and you know your battery is long in the tooth. Don't second guess it. Replace it.

The day I thought my first battery was dying, a load test said it wasn't. I purchased one of those micro start battery kits and went on my way. Stopped to visit some friends later in the day.....and the Spyder would not start. Moral of the story, I listened to my hunch, accepted the test result, but bought back up(micro start). And am glad I did. From that point on the micro start gets moved to whatever bike I'm going out on. Along with an air compressor & stop & go tire kit.

When in doubt--change it out. The 2011 gets a new battery this year when I bring it in for oil change service.

Batteries have a way of quitting at the most inopportune times. Away from home and no service in the area.

Avoid Murphy's Law if you can. :yes:

WELL the charging system on the V-twins wasn't all that good .... so 5 years is time to be thinking - another one .... However if your battery was set-up properly and you have maintained it ...... it could go another year or two ..... but watch it carefully ....... Mike :thumbup:

We trust batteries 2 years. The first sign of trouble beyond that, it gets replaced. Have a micro start jumper battery, as well.
I did try a MIRAI lithium ion battery, and it did last 5 years, and as far as I know, still in it- I traded that bike in. I was just at the economic break even point, so, it was worth how much I paid. Ann hates to push start me!
I hate to worry; when in doubt, change it out!! Joe

I have been riding for over 60 years
and the best advice I can give you is
change out your battery every 3 years
if you don't want to get stranded out on the
hiway with a dead battery,

:agree: .......... Walmart - markets for " Deltran brand " lithium batteries ....... they have a 24 size for $ 176.00 +/- , this is about $ 50 more than an OEM Yuasa ..................Mike

At the very least buy a new one now, charge it up properly, and carry it with you. I did that with my Goldwing. Carried it for a year before I needed to use it.

I changed the battery in our 2012 RT last fall. It still tested good but it was on my mind. Got a new one at Batteries Plus.

All things considered the OEM is a good choice for replacement. Buy online & save $.

I changed mine out last week and changing my buddies both 5 years in service. Both batterys checked out good but just piece of mind.Good thing is my snowmobiles and quads take same batterys so maybe get another 5 years use as there batterys lasted 12 years and are now needing batterys.
Just one less thing to worry about. The battery in the U.S. should be cheaper than in Canada at $99.50 CDN for the Yuasa YTX24HL-BS.

change your battery if its showing problems.great peace of mind. Got 5 years out of same battery used on my honda snow blower just replaced this winter.

Thanks to all for the good advice... I did have a new battery installed along with the new rear tire. Now all we need is a little dry weather so we can do some riding before leaving for Americade! :gaah:

Anything special about changing out the battery on the RT.

Just picked up my 14 RT about 10 days ago. I noticed the battery was a bit sluggish. The 400 mile ride home should have charged it. No idea how old the current one is, appears to be stock. It tests-out as needing to be replaced, charging system appears fine. Any thing out of the ordinarily for changing the battery, or is it similar to cars and trucks? Any feed back welcome.
