• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. Ambient Temperature

I have noticed that the ambient temperature reading on my 2014 RT LTD is within 2 or 3 degrees of actual temperature over a wide range of temps. It seems to me that very few bikes throw off that little heat which is just one more testament to the 2014 Rt improvements

In hot weather (88 and up) my 2010 and 2012 always recorded 7 to 8 degrees F higher the outdoor temp. The 2014 doesn't do that...

Yup, my 2012 also reports the temp higher than it really is.
I too just chalked it up to heat coming off the bike.

My 2011 is about 8 degrees higher than ambient pretty consistently.
As said, the temp sensor is obviously influenced by the heat of the motor in some way.

I should look at the service manual but where the hell is the temp sensor that reads ambient temp on the dash?

I have a hard time believing it's being influenced by engine heat. The sensor is located in the air duct, right side, in the frunk. The sensor is used for both the ambient temp on the gauge and the air temp the engine ECM uses to control fuel mix. After I added the headlight modulator on my '13 RT I took it out for a test ride without the frunk installed. Ambient temp was shown as something like -75 and Nanny threw a code that was for AAPT. When I read the description for the code and saw that it was for the AAPT it all made sense, since the sensor was in the frunk back home in the garage and not on the bike!

This thread reminded of some of the threads about air temperature sensors mounted in the wrong place on the early models. At that time, I understood that the correct placement of the sensor was done by the dealer, rather than the factory. If the sensor is still mounted at the dealer, in the wrong location, could that be part of the big variance in heat reports on the '13's?:dontknow:

With the mild temperature here so far; I've noticed that it's tracking closer to more conventional thermometers also... within two degrees!

What little I've checked that's been my experience also. What I can't figure out is why the sensor is so slow to respond to temp change. When I leave home it takes 10 minutes or longer before the ambient temp shown has dropped from the garage warmth to the outdoor cool. It should be almost instantaneous since it's all electronic. I wonder if the ECM is computing and displaying something like a five minute running average temperature. That would explain the slow display change.

Temp readings

Update: Today. Cycled 1 degree. 96/95

Recent observations. Changes appear to happen in two degree increments. Have seen it cycle between
86/88 and just last night between 107/109. Parked in the shade for an hour a few days ago and it read 117 on start up. Ten miles and several stop signs later it had only dropped to 107. Ambient was around 98 degrees.

Like Rodger said. It reads what it reads. As long as it's not causing codes the ECM should handle it.

Codes(the dreaded orange screen) seem to come at 121 plus. jm2c
