AMA's 15 Best Motorcycle Roads

Dragonrider

New member
I couldn't believe my eyes, when TWO of MY favorite roads made the list!!

#15- Oregon 3 from Enterprise to Clarkston, WA has been a fav for over a decade, and I've traveled on it a dozen times! Anyone who can include it in a trip won't be disappointed. It has lots of terrain/cliamate changes, and a secret section, sure to put a wide grin on your face.

#9 - Route 12 through Lolo Pass in Northern Idaho is a stunning -usually traffic free - trip tha parallels the Salmon river.

If anyone is planning trips that will, or could include either of these, let me know, as I have tons of pictures from both areas!!! :2thumbs:

:agree:  I've got some real beauties in my back yard that I'm sure they don't know about... None of them are hours long, but if you can string together five or six interesting miles it can certainly paint a big smile on! :D
So give us the list so that we can start making plans for summer road trips... :2thumbs:

Bob,

This isn't the list of AMA's top 15; but, it is a list for NYS:

And, for the whole U.S., which someone else posted previously:

No doubt we all have local roads the ring our bell, but not enough AMA members know about them to give them a reasonable vote - I have tons of them here in Oregon, but I'll never ride a bike very far east of the rockies - so I enjoy reading about other's views.

I will be riding my Spyder on the AMA's #1 road, just east of Yellowstone this year - now that I've read about it, I REALLY can't wait.

The entire list is in this month's AMA magazine - maybe on-line too, but I haven't checked. The entire list includes the usual Dragon's tail, etc...

I absolutely agree with you on your favorite roads, especially the Lolo Pass. My wife had never been down that road before, so when I bought my 1800 Wing a number of years ago, we made a special trip up there just so I could take her down that road.....77 beautiful miles of twisties! Can't wait to do it on my :spyder:!!

3. US 129 - "The Tail of the Dragon"

5. California Highway 1 Pacific Coast Highway

8. Route 36 California

10. Angeles Crest Highway - California Route 2

I've done these, all on the Spyder with the exception of Route 36 which I did in my Grand Am SC/T. I will be doing Route 36 on the Spyder in August though. :o)

There are a couple really great motorcycle routes up in that area.

I did Angeles Crest Highway with about 100+ other Spyders :D

OMG !!! Who else has done #5, PCH

2 yrs. Ago I went with two of my bros. Out to CA to visit our other bros. (Big Family) it was for vacation, but sadly my sis-n-law passed away in her sleep while we were out visiting Vegas :yikes: Not a very good vacation:thumbup:

But my 2 bros. & I borrowed the mini-van and went up to the Red-Woods in Washington then took Highway 1 all the way down the coast & it was a FRIG'N :yikes: NIGHTMARE!!! :yikes:

The twistiest, foggiest, most beautiful changes in scenery (when u could see it) 2 lanes with sheer cliffs & no guardrails, straight down into the ocean & they allow :cus:COWS on the :cus: road :hun: there are a few sections of the road that go right thru ppl's cow farms & they have metal strips embedded into sections of the road so it will trip the cows to stay off that area of road and stay in that section. But if your not paying attention to the road & are look'n at all the beautiful scenery, that roadkill is larger than many vehicles out there :gaah:

Sorry, guess I just had to let that out. We now continue back to your regulary scheduled Thread Topic :opps:

Ps.......... I'd still love to Try it with Teddy's :spyder: tho :D

#'s 2, 3, 7, 11 & 12 are in our back yard, (and they missed a few that are as good or better than these too).

So I guess we're in the right spot!

I've ridden some of these on the West Coast and they are great too!

Thanks for posting:thumbup:. Although I've been on several of them, looks like I still have some riding to do.......
:agree:
I've been on portions of six of them but only one on my Spyder.
Would love to do Glaciers Going to the Sun Highway. I remember that as a 13 year old and it was awesome then.

Okay, would like to hit 2 & 7 this summer, have been on #3, I think we did some of #10 when out in LA for the Spyder event. Didn't realize how close some of these were, could do a long day or weekend for #14 and a long weekend for #12. I have so many places to take my spyder yet.

And I was hoping that you and Teddy might ride down Texas way sometime. LOL But the best roads in west Texas just about all have cattle guards to cross in the road. They really aren't a problem if they're maintained and you hit them correctly.

It is a great list of rides.

If any of you are planning on doing the Natchez Trace, I would recommend doing it in late March-May. Mississippi is not a place to ride for the faint of heart in the summer; the heat and humidity here takes it's tole on both rider and machine. Additionally, start in Natchez and go north. Once you hit Nashville turn west to Memphise. After a night in Memphise take highway 61 South (Blues Hwy). Stop in Vicksburg, a must see is the National Battlefield. I would ride Hwy 61 all the way to Baton Rouge, then end in New Orleans. Now that's a thunder run!
