• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

Airbox removal - Ugh!!!

I've had a set of BajaRon plug wires for about a year now, and haven't installed them. I bought them to take in for my 14,000 mile service, figured the dealer was already there... Well, THAT dealer would replace the plugs, but NOT the wires!! :dontknow:

So, anyhow, they've been laying around since then. Well, I decided that since I was due an oil change now, and wanted to add some more lights, she was going to be down for a while, and I'd just change out the wires too...

First of all, as we all know, you can't even verify that the 998 has a front cylinder without moving that airbox, so I decided to pull it. I was told that since I was that deep into the project, I should consider an airbox swap, which I originally did not want to do - mainly just keeping her original at least until the warranty had expired.

Well, after gaining a whole new vocabulary of colorful expletives, tugging, prying, sweating... and did I mention my new vocabulary?

That airbox is NOT going back in!!! Awaiting a new one from J.T.!!!
 
Welcome to the club.

I cursed a lot of designers and engineers too when I pulled mine out, but so glad that now its gone. It also made it much easier to add the air horn since I was able to use one of the left over brackets to attach it to on the left side.

Also gives a nice little growl upon acceleration.
 
Air Box

Been there done that......that box is a real pain to remove....I did the JT install and I like it...I found it amazing how big the air box was when I finally got it out.
 
One of the first things I did to my wife's STL when we bought it was to replace the airbox with JT's. Get the prefilter if you don't want to hear the injectors and air intake.
 
So I've heard...!!

both the new language and the difficulty removing the air box on some models. Having the RS it is a lot easier. Congrats on accomplishing it and deciding not to enter that fight again...:2thumbs:
 
AIR BOX

I removed the air box from my ST-S earlier this year. I invented a few new words and even had to cut it out in pieces with a dremel. But it sure made it a lot easier to install Ron's plugs and wires. And I love JT's new air filter mount!!
 
I guess the big drawback is...

Now when I take my :spyder2: for service, they have "time standards" for certain things - like removing crap to access the front spark plug. Since that time is no longer required, I'll probably still be charged the standard, instead of the actual time...:banghead:
 
I'd make a point of letting them know, that you've made their job easier... ;)

...and expect it to be reflected in the labor charges! :thumbup:

Any step by step instructions or videos available for this?

No video, but I had to remove a lot of stuff just to get to it.

To start with (some of this is a given):
Mirrors
upper and lower side tupperware
Frunk
Both side shields
Glove box unit Removed all bolts, but left it floating
Dash / headlight / windshield unit - removed bolts left it floating
I removed all 5 bolts for the right side sub frame to make room to get airbox out
Removed front bolts for left sub frame so I could have enough room to get the resonator out

Then, it's a matter of twisting, tugging, proper words, and holding your tongue right - For me, I had to hold it on the left side of my mouth, gently between my teeth. This method provides me with a gentle, yet painful reminder that I'm too frustrated, and need to walk away.
 
Well, I got home from work at 6:00, and J.T's air filter was waiting for me. I changed out of my "meet the bosses" clothes, and into my "Go out to the garage" clothes. So, I started working on the air filter about 6:10. By 6:45 it was in.

So, the condensed version: 5+ hours and elevated blood pressure to remove. 45 minutes of "smooth sailing" to install.

Just to give a visual reference to see what the filter replaces...
