As far as being dramatic, I don't think so. Anyone who wants to argue about the merits of not wearing proper gear is really not taking a defensible position...on that note, I'm not saying an airbag is the ONLY way to go, as there is good quality protective garb of several varieties, but if you can put an airbag between you and the concrete, as well as wear a full face shield, you'll minimize the injuries as best as possible...nothing is absolute, but IMHO, if people are going to dump tons of money into their bike, they should maybe be at least a bit concerned about their safety and do what they can to protect themselves so they can ride their bikes for a long time.
Toughness won't help you when you come off your bike...proper protection and some luck will! There's more than enough info. out there about the danger of riding a bike...trying to minimize damage should be a concern.
