Air Horn on Spyder RT Ltd.

Has anybody mounted an air horn of the new 2013 RT Ltd? If so, what brand, model, where did you put it? Sometimes it is necessary to let people know you are there.

The Stebel Nautilus is the "Mac Daddy" of noise. :2thumbs:
GeoffCee wrote up a nicely detailed set of instructions on how to do it; the RIGHT way!
I think that it's in the DIY section...

It's always good to read and study someone else's efforts. However, since the battery on the 2013 RT is located up front there isn't room to install the horn up front as GeoffCee did. No room for an additional fuse box for additional farkles either. I, as yet have not figured out my horn install either.

Stebel Nautilus

I have the Stebel Nautilus on my '13 RT. I bought the horn and the wiring kit to make it basically plug-n-play. I mounted it where the original horn was.
I bought a Stebel Nautilus and had a Can-Am dealer put it on, in place of the OEM one. My horn went from meep-meep to Beep-Beep. I am not satisfied. Maybe they installed incorrectly, or something, but it's almost an embarrassment. I had a guy pull in front of me on my way back from Lamont's last week or so. When I need to alert someone to my presence (i.e. my life is in peril) I want the horn to go WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!

I want them to think an oceanliner is bearing down on them. I am looking into marine or trucker's horns mounted deep in the 'ram scoop' of the front Tupperware, pointed forward. Anyone go that route?

Horns

I installed a set of Rivco Magnum Electric horns,

You also need the installation kit which is 40 bucks,

There as loud as a large car which is a lot better then the Roadrunner horn it had, it installs under the right fog lamp, you don't have to drill anything you use pre exsisting holes and slip nuts, all the hardware for mounting on the Spyder is included in the kit, basicaly disconnect the stock horn, attach the supplied extention to the wire , hook up to the new horns relay, power from the battery through the supplied fused wire, install took me about 2 hours.

Train Air Horn

Once helped a gentleman install a set of railroad engine air horns on his Provost motor home. When all was finished, we gave it a test. Ground shook for 100 yards all around! I think if he sounded the horn out on the road, it would have people heading for the shoulder of the highway! Have to think of any state or local laws on the use of something like this. My Freightliner (RV toter) had a two horn system; air (pull cord) and an electric one (steering wheel button).

Waaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!

I put a Stebel Nautilus air horn on my 2012 RT and it makes a significant noise! I have definitely blown 18 wheelers away when they wanted to get up close and personal in the same space as me. Great investment! Safety farkle! You can get these and the wring harnesses for a reasonable rate at Amazon.com

I guess I am going to have to have mine checked. I bought one and had it installed and it is just a above a "meep"

Updates?

Let's resurrect a thread today!

So, anyone have an OOGA horn on their Spyder F3? :hun:

Any insights on LOUD SOUNDING horns on their Spyders?

I recently installed a Stebel on my '15 RTL, when I tested it after install it sounded more like a vibrator than a horn. I switched the connectors and found that I had reversed the polarity - it worked fine after that.

Hi Everybody,

If I bring this single kit (link below) to my local dealer, does it have everything needed to install a louder horn? I'm just trying to avoid buying insufficient parts for the task.

Thanks!

If it only comes with what's in the picture, you're not getting anything more than comes with the Stebel but are paying more than twice the cost of the Stebel. Basically you'll need the following to get it installed:
  • Air horn
  • Relay
  • Wire, connectors, maybe fuse, to get high current positive power to relay
  • Wire/connectors for relay ground
  • Wire/connectors to connect stock horn wire to relay
  • Necessary material for mounting as desired

I'd think that most dealers would have all this on hand, but I'm sure it varies. Maybe call and discuss with your dealer and see what they need you to supply?

Installation

When I switched horns to the Stebel, I used the original wiring. The advice that I was given said that unless you are going to "lay on the horn" for more than 10 - 15 seconds, you would not need the relay. The horn worked beautifully on a 700 mile charity ride this past weekend. The only problem that I encountered with the installation was trying to drill out the smaller hole on the brackets that the original horn was mounted to - without a drill press, they twisted and bent when I tried to make the hole larger. I remembered that I had some 1/4" aluminum bar stock laying around, so I cut it to the length of those originals and drilled the holes in the original location. Worked like a champ! That bracket improvisation took the most time, it would have otherwise been a 20 minute install. Save some money and do it yourself after watching the above video, the only tools that you'll need are 10 and 13mm wrenches.

I too installed my horn without the relay. I only use the horn when necessary and for short bursts. Have had it in for a year now with no problems.
