Air Compressor

Took the Spyder out for a ride yesterday and noticed that the compressor for the air ride is much louder than it was originally. Had to listen to hear it when first purchased and now I can hear it over engine noise at slow speeds and seams to kick on more frequent.
Does not lose any air in suspension over days of setting so I am ruling out any leaks in fittings or air bag, when it runs it is for less than a full second, and about 3 seconds is the longest I have ever heard it run.
Is this normal, is there an air filter I need to clean, or is it a sign of the compressor going bad?

Hmmmm looks like I stumped all the people who know everything about Spyder RT and the air compressors.
I will look for ideas elsewhere.

These things tend to self destruct. There is a screw on the connecting rod that backs out and allows the connecting rod to bang on the crank shaft. That most likely where the noise is coming from. When it gets loose enough, the crank shaft will turn, but not move the piston up and down. Unfortunately, you must remove the compressor and its cylinder to access the crank. Now its a good time to replace the OEM compressor with an aftermarket unit. They are available on eBay and Amazon for about $75. It's a bit of a job, but if you can turn a wrench, you can do it. On YouTube there are a couple of videos on how to do this. Doc shows a way to do it from underneath and I show a way to do it from on top. Big question, are you still under warranty?

Yes, still under warranty. I didn't want to take it in and them tell me that it is normal, or that there was something like a filter I didn't clean. I looked all through the manual and couldn't find where air was drawn in, so I was unsure of there was a filter that was getting plugged, or if it is just the nature of the compressor.

Thanks much

Checked that last night, all good and making good contact.
Does anyone know, is there an air cleaner on the compressor?
.
Any filter is built in. Here is a link to some videos:

Went through 2 OEM compressors 2 years ago, then bought a Viair 98C compressor, found the leak in my airbag and green slimed it, developed and put on a protector cup for the AB and we are still ryding 2 seasons later that same way. I have another to do Thursday this week. He bought the compressor on line at Walmart.
NOTE: If you slime your AB you need to remove it and pour it in through the top. Otherwise, you will gum up lots of stuff you don't want gummed up.

Thank you very much. If the filter is built in then I have no worries about taking it in and seeing if it will be covered by the warranty.
I love your suggestions and will follow them if and when it is not covered. Thanks for the great info!!

The end screw on my original compressor backed out and would not pump air anymore. Had mine replaced under warranty. Works.good. to hear mine run it has to be fairly quiet. Bruce

When that happened did it run non stop or cycle on and off?
So far mine seams to still be pumping air, (at least it raises when it pumps) It is just MUCH louder than it ever has been, and kicks in at every stop, then when I take off, and every now and then when I ride. Truthfully it may have always ran that much, it was just quieter so I didn't hear it.

It would not pump air. Wife and I was on a trip to Ohio and we used a Bicycle pump to keep the air bag around 50 lbs. Dealer took my Spyder in when we got back. They had replaced the pump and I was back on the road in 3 days. It showed manual on the screen when you tried to adjust the ride. Bruce

This is a progressive condition. It starts getting loud and cycles on and off more often, until it finally stops pumping air and just makes noise.

I am having a similar issue. Mine was going into manual mode so I took it to the dealer. They could not find anything wrong as it always works when first started. However, on the first long ride, it started to go into manual again. I rode it to the dealer and did not switch the key off so I could show them it was in manual. They replaced the compressor and connector to the compressor. I am now hearing the compressor, could not before, and it is cycling frequently. I am curious about this myself. If this one goes out as well, I am not sure I will be satisfied with just another compressor replacement.

No manual mode on mine yet, just MUCH louder than ever before. Had to have everything off to hear it then, now hear it with everything on.

Good luck. What I am concerned about is the compressor burning out with it cycling so often. Mine is also louder than it used to be before they replaced it.
