Aftermarket gas cap

coz

I need a good quality aftermarket gas cap. The brp replacement cap is a joke. Every time I put gas in , I find that it's just sitting there, loose. I know that it's been talked about recently. If someone knows what to get ,off the top of their head..... ( 08 gs)

I got a Stant cap, used it for a week, put the OEM cap back on. I was getting the dreaded gas fumes AGAIN, and determined that it was the Stant cap. I don't think it was seated properly. With the OEM cap back on, no more fumes. There was a thread here a couple of weeks ago extolling the virtues of the Stant cap, but IMHO, it was a waste of money.

Speaking of gas caps, what gas cap was it that Mike used that you didn't have to take off to refuel?? Mike?!?!

PermaCAP II........I'm not sure where you can get these. I have seen them on E-Bay......They ..DO NOT prevent all fumes from coming out of the gas tank.......if I get down by the cap and sniff it, I can smell the Gas......However not in the garage or while sitting on the Spyder even if it's not moving.................Hope this helps........Mike ......................Because of the cost of this cap I wouldn't recommend it......I only have it because with my Gas Door being 3 1/2 in Diameter I needed this car to make it work......The PermaCAP has a flapper door on the top. You don't need to remove it to put the gas in.........:ohyea:

The BRP gas cap is made in Mexico and the Stant gas cap is also made in Mexico. Not sure there is a difference :dontknow:

Just curious Coz. Does your cap have a black or red gasket? Red is the "latest greatest". We got a recall notice 3-4 months ago to replace the gas cap on our 08.

It has the red gasket and is the larger size cap than the original. I might give my original cap a test run and see how it does. I don't remember if there was ever a problem with it or not.
Just tried the original cap. It only tightens slightly better than the brp replacement cap, which is not much.
My Frontier gas cap requires some effort to unscrew. WTH ?:dontknow:

Thanks for the part #. I think I'll try a new one.
One thing to consider is that the STANT gas cap has both a vented model and a non-vented model. I would think you do NOT want the vented cap because of the possibility of fumes coming from under the seat. I think the item #s given are for non-vented gas caps.

Vented or not...We have been using a vented Stant cap. What many people do not realize is that a vented cap does not mean the cap is free venting to release gasoline fumes.

I did not use the Stant part numbers specified in this topic. The cap I purchased is vented, but only to allow air into the fuel tank if needed.

I went with a vacuum relief type vented cap after seeing another topic here where the owners fuel tank collapsed. The vacuum relief serves as a secondary or backup in case the OEM vent valve fails.

We have not had one indication of gasoline fumes in our closed garage or while riding.

Run what you prefer, but be certain whatever cap you run will not vent freely to the atmosphere on the Spyder.

I've got the same one as PK and not had any problem with gas fumes since fitting it - mind you it's winter here so no chance of heat related fumes.

When I had the 2013 recall cap I'd had a gas fumes smell a few times and traced that to the evap canister rather than the gas cap. Did a canisterectomy and not had the gas smell since with either cap.

(Replaced the 2013 one because I'd had the dreaded click-click-click at a petrol station and it took me 10 minutes to remote it)

I also got the recall notice, stopped at dealer a few weeks ago and they said we need to see the VIN and look at the cap. Finally got there again today and they say nope yours has already been done somewhere else or didn't need it, even though my cap has the yellow o-ring, but they offered to let me buy one. HMM, they would have had to order it if it was a recall item or they magically had one in stock if I wanted to buy it.

Nice Cap

New gas cap locks down nice and tight, unlike both previous brp gas caps. Yeee-haw.

Click,click,click-------

I don't understand---
I've turning the gas caps on the cars and trucks for years untill the clicked and NEVER had a gas cap problem. Was even told spaciffically to do this on my wife's Equinox sport. I thought the clicking is to make sure the cap is tight enough and they are supposed to be just that tight???

Are our :spyder2: fuel systems that much different than modern autos???

BTW: A common "check engin light" is a loose gas cap. And yes I did already buy the Slant cap--- it clicks too:banghead: but I believe it is supposed to???
Kaos

The clicking is supposed to prevent over tightening, and in a perfect world you should be able to tighten the cap and click it a few times with no issues. However, the brp caps are junk and are prone to over tightening and then not being able to get them back off. That's why most of us just snug the cap just prior to the clicks and stop there. The spyder fuel system is not pressurized for emissions testing like a car, so there are no check engine light concerns.
