• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

advice anyone

Went to my local dealer today to have my trunk latch and rear cowling replaced under warranty and figured might as well have the oil changed 4400 miles since last change, and to my knowledge they've been using the 10/40 AMSOIL I requested. I waited, having scheduled it in advance, to show up at 1, and had to be at work by 5p on the other side of town from them. 5:30 just finishing it, and they gave me the remaining half quart in the frunk, and I notice it's 20/50 AMSOIL. I'd checked in on FaceBook as having been there but didn't repost anything but I'm rather perturbed that given we're coming on winter, especially ok it's 80' on way back today, but we're in for winter, and isn't 20/50 thicker than even the BRP summer grade oil? if that's what I should have been running during the hotter months that'd be ok, but seems like i read somewhere on SL that 20/50 is too thick? I use it in my airhead bmw but for my Spyder? your thoughts on this matter please? :dontknow: just tempted to comment on FB as to wrong weight oil being used but restraint of tongue and pen is always easier it seems. Having heard about the nightmares others have had at the OTHER BRP dealer in town, I consider myself lucky so far. Seems like everytime i'm there I have to stay on top of them despite making lists of everything needs paying attention to. Rather stay on their good side, want to do this tactfully.

Have to agree..!!

:agree: and if they made the mistake they should replace it with the oil you asked for. :gaah:

Please forgive my ignorance...
Could it be possible that they figure your Winters are "warm" enough, to make it a viable choice? :dontknow:
I'm also not sure about why you'd think about posting it on Facebook...

I check in occasionally when I go places on FB, Bob. I just got the reply from the service manager and now they're saying they used 20/50 the last time, that ASOIL is not BRP recommended. While over the years I've preferred thicker oils given our hotter climate, somewhere I'd read 20/50 can cause some harm in Spyders. Tapatalk just upgraded and EEK there's ads! Gonna have to find the posts. She also said Spyderlovers is NOT an authority! The nerve of her! The left over bottles I'd gotten from them as well as the singles I'd purchased separately were 10/40. Anybody find that thread with the info on viscosity and the ratings?

Living the dream while I still can!

Here is hoping you get the issue solved to your satisfaction. Also recommend doing the detective homework before giving the dealer to much heck.

Remember seeing threads on oil, but being a non-technical, I don't remember what the outcome of the discussions were. Try looking up some of Baja Rons posts. I think that is where you will find the most complete information about oil and Amsoil information.

I too have purchased Amsoil oil for my spyder but have not changed it as yet. But now you say your dealer said that Amsoil is not recommended by BRP? Well now I am confused. Should I just keep this oil and purchase the recommended oil instead? What weight 10w/40 or 20w/50 Confused!!!

Most dealers sell different brands of oil. The dealer cannot legally recommend another type/brand oil over what the manufacturer recommends. That's known as conflict of interest and could result in the dealer being held responsible for a failure or issue with the motor or transmission. BRP doesn't recommend AMSOIL simply because they don't sell it. Their vested interest is in their own branded oil. That would be the same as GM, Ford etc., recommending their own oil. It doesn't necessarily mean that AMSOIL is bad for the Rotax engine.

I agree

I have used AMSOIL forever...and not one of my vehicles/dealers have approved of me using AMSOIL...for reasons as you state above. I have run AMSOIL in my Spyder from the get go...I provide the oil and the dealer does the change...Know BajaRon has all the technical info on AMSOIL....lots of spyder ryders use AMSOIL...never heard a complaint on it....and I reallllly believe if the owners had a problem they would have stated it here!!! Just sayin' :lecturef_smilie:

Just thinking. Isn't 20W50 for air cooled engines??? I seem to remember reading that in another post on motor oil usage. Ron? Lamomt?

There is a big difference between "recommended" and "meets specifications." If the oil used meets the manufacturer's specifications, it need not be a "recommended" oil to fulfill the engine's needs.

Manufacturers seldom recommend other oils but do accept oils that meet or exceed their specifications. Amsoil does meet and exceed

20W-50 does not meet BRP specifications, no matter what brand is chosen. The oil is intended for air-cooled engines and is too viscous for liquid-cooled production engines designed for lighter oils. I would document this in writing (letter to the dealership) and in photos, then I'd change the oil again...preferably at another dealership, unless they are very apologetic and bend over backwards to make ammends.

Absolutely! It's too thick for the water-cooled Rotax in our :spyder2:. Summer weight BRP oil is 5W40 and winter weight is 0W40.
