• There were many reasons for the change of the site software, the biggest was security. The age of the old software also meant no server updates for certain programs. There are many benefits to the new software, one of the biggest is the mobile functionality. Ill fix up some stuff in the coming days, we'll also try to get some of the old addons back or the data imported back into the site like the garage. To create a thread or to reply with a post is basically the same as it was in the prior software. The default style of the site is light colored, but i temporarily added a darker colored style, to change you can find a link at the bottom of the site.

A question about brake system

I am wondering....How long do you think a master cylinder should last? I'm kind of perplexed because mine only lasted 2 years, just enough time for the warranty to run out and now I have to replace it. I've never had a master cylinder go out on anything I've ever owned so I would think they would be more reliable than 2 years. Am I wrong on this, could this maybe something wrong in the part itself when it was installed. Just something I am wondering about.
 
That seems like a really short timeframe to me. I'm not sure if I've heard of many... if any going out on the Spyder. My 2008 GS had 56,000 miles on it... and I had never even changed the brake fluid....... so yes-- I think they should last MUCH longer than what yours did.
 
:agree: Have not heard of any issues that I can recall with bad master cylinder on any Spyder. I am familiar with three :ani29:'s with over 25,000 miles each, no brake problems on any of them.
 
I have had no real experience with brake problems, but after taking a look under my RT it seems that the master cylinder if fairly close to the exhaust pipe. I can't help think that all that extreme heat so close by is not a good thing. Next time I have to remove side covers I will look into adding some exhaust wrap to a few places. Especially on the left side where the pipe curves into the gas tank. Also from past experience building aircraft hydraulic systems I can say that a poorly assembled O-ring or piston cup that may have been slightly damaged during the manufacturing process would work OK for a short time, and then suddenly fail. Only way to know for sure would be to do a total diss-assembly and failure analysis. Hardly worth the time and effort.

Well I thought 2 years was too short but obviously mine thought it was time to breakdown on me so now I have to buy a new one since there is no such thing as rebuilts and according to my dealer there is no way to just fix the internal problem. They were going to talk to BRP to see if they would pick this up for me, but I'm not holding my breath. So I figure I'll have to pay the $780 dollar bill.

Hate to state the obvious.... but that $780 could have gone towards an extended BEST warranty......:sour:

Your right it could have, but you would also think that the manufacture would check the part a little more closely before sending out. I also look at it this way, if I can't afford to fix things that wear out or break...........then I can't afford to buy this machine in the first place.

There is no way for any quality control procedure to catch a problem two years down the road. It probably was an O-ring or seal failure, perhaps caused by a tiny flaw or damage during assembly. Sorry for the bad luck, but these are extremely uncommon problems. They happen sometimes. You just have to chalk them up to bad luck...not bad procedures on the part of the manufacturer. If there is any fault here, it is in that BRP has not made provisions for this expensive wear part to be rebuildable.

Yes they are telling me it is probably a bad O ring. Such as it is, I guess I would hope that I could get more use out of it before it goes out. But I'll look on the bright side, I'll have a new master cylinder which hopefully will last a long time and I will have many enjoyable rides not having to worry too much about not stopping. It's just nice at least to know that it's not to hard of fix. small price to pay for peace of mind.
