998 2 cyl Lost a Header to Cat retention spring, big ride coming up Wednesday

So I noticed a change in my Exhaust note (sounds like a brush on a snare drum effect) on my 2013 998 2 Cyl RTL. Popped it up on the lift and found one of the Header to Cat retention springs gone.
Gonna try local Autozone shops for a replacement spring, but just how critical is that spring if I can't find anything by 5:30 AM Wednesday (Departing on a IBA SS1K then).

Specifically which spring? There is a spot for one on the left side that does not have one installed from the factory. That's because it is not needed.

It is on the left side, sitting on the bike looking forward. So the right side uses a spring, but the left doesn't? I thought the missing spring on the left would explain the recent exhaust note change.

Yep. And I just double checked the parts diagram for your model year just to be sure. Double check to see if that snare drum effect might be coming from your OEM muffler. There's a baffle in there that likes to vibrate.

OK, I've had the Spyder up on a Jack and Jack stands and started it, felt all around each exhaust seam/join and no leaks, is the baffle in the stock exhaust prone to coming loose? Bike's only got 15,000 on it.

It could well be that!! :dontknow:

As others have mentioned, there IS a baffle in the stock (stock, OE, or OEM, whatever you want to call it!) exhaust (or muffler) that is prone to vibrating &/or coming loose - altho it often doesn't last as long as 15,000 miles before it does!! You must just be lucky that it lasted that long!!

Happened to my son in law.....

..... and the dealer replaced the catalytic converter under the "best" warranty. All is fine now. It was not the muffler.

I was under the impression the loose baffle in the muffler was for the 990 or pre 2013 models !? ... as is my wife 2012RS. :dontknow:

I had to finally replace my OEM muffler because of the rattle, I took several years but the noise just got more annoying every day!!!

Mine would buzz at a certain RPM band and load. And if it is your CAT, your 5 year emissions warranty will cover that. So, you've done the detective work and found that there are no leaks. No safety concern, then. Have a great trip. Check it out with your dealer when you get back.

Lucky you....

...in canada, no such 5 years emission warranty..... just the normal warranty. :gaah:

Thanks everyone! I can ride the IBA SS1K Ride in comfortably now. I'll get the cat / muff checked out when I get back.
I KNEW I needed that .. Akrapovic exhaust:yes: (think the wife will buy that reasoning;))

There's some great prices on that exhaust for the V-Twin out there right now on Amazon and eBay. Your wife likes a bargain, doesn't she?

I would suggest checking with dealerships that have swapped out an exhaust for an aftermarket and see if you could just pay them for the install.
I got my replacement 3 or 4 years ago at the Spyder owners event in Colorado for free that Len attended from PitBull Powersports :bowdown: Were all family!
