87 Octane fuel

I was wondering if I'm the only RT rider using the 87 octane fuel? I've tried 93,91,89 & 87 octane fuels. To me the Spyder RT runs best on 87 octane and gets a more complete fuel burn. Its very flat here and no mountains and at sea level mostly. I've never noticed any engine ping or knock using the 87 octane.
Anyone have input or thoughts on this?

I also use 87 octane without any engine or performance issues. MPG made no difference between any of the octane gas, so why not save the money and go with what works!

You won't notice any knocking because the computers are happily doing their jobs. The engine gets detuned to prevent any damage...

The Spyder is designed to run on premium for maximum performance. Using a lower octane fuel will result in less power. We did not buy the Spyder because it runs on regular gas to save money. We bought it for the fun and performance.

Glad to hear your RT runs well on the 87 octane. Mine seemed a big sluggish the couple times I tried it--so I stick with 90--the highest I can find here.

Both John and I ride 2011 RTs and we use 87. If you look by the fuel door it even tells u 87. On the 2012 it tells u to use premium. We will stay in the 2011. Pennies definitely count when there r 2 bikes and both of us are retired.

Only the RT requires higher octane. The RS models are fine with the 87.. last time I checked.

I go with what BRP says. Ran 87 on my GS/RS for 56,000 miles. Tried a few tanks of 91-93 and it was a waste of money.

My 2012 RT says 91 --- so that's what I run.

:agree: No difference whatsoever when I've run higher octane in my RS, so I run 87.

Noticeable difference, however, when I can run real gas vs. ethanol...

I Always Use 93 When Available.

I have a big stupid truck that I could probably run crude oil through and it would fire, but I run 93 in that also.

I also use full synthetic oils, and maintain oil and air filters,...

I even change cabin air filters in my cages,...Oh, and I change the filter in my HVAC in the house every 30 days too.

Say what you will, but I have never a bad valve, thrown a rod, had a vehicle blow blue smoke, never needed a head gasket rebuilt, never needed an injector cleaned/replaced,....ever (knock on wood). I drove a Ford Escort (Mazda engine) to 250k miles using full synth oil (from first 500 mile change) and highest quality fuel I could find. After seven years I finally decided to trade it in for a six pack of beer and a bag of Snyders Pretzels. You couldn't even feel it at idle in the driveway, the engine still ran like new. The clutch however needed a little loving,...I always tried to drive it like a Porsch. Haha!

I'm not saying I'm Mr. Goodwrench either, far from it. Its just my opinion that if you take good care of something, and use your technology where you can, the 'something' will generally take good care of you back. I understand the whole "But Pete, the book says,...!!!" Ok, ok,... I get it, haha!

I run Premium in my 2011 RT but I often find myself in secluded areas and need gas. If the station is very remote and still sells premium, I still use regular! The reason being that the station probably does not sell much premium and there is a good chance in getting "bad" gas. I do not use any octane boosters and the bike runs fine. As for ethanol, I'm not too concerned tho many claim better gas mileage by adding some additive like Seafoam.

I always have ran 87 in my 2012 RT, thats what my dealer told me to use? didn't know any different.

I have a 2012 RT and it seems to run fine on 87 but i get much better mileage on 93 so that is what I run cause I know it is better for the engine.

Yea; and my dealer told me back in May of 08 that the Spyder gets 45 MPG I knew that wasn't true before i bought it, Most dealers/sales people will tell you any thing you want to hear to make a sale, 87 is the MINIMUM, Not the only grade you can use."!

Manual says minimum of 87 octane I try to fill up two out of three with premium seems to run a little better.
